About the role

We have created an exciting opportunity for a Graduate Facultative Underwriter to work in both Property and Casualty facultative underwriting. We are looking to strengthen our talent pool and train a high potential individual within our team. The candidate will work in a fast-paced, team environment with the highest caliber professionals in the field. The role will be based in NYC, Chicago or Atlanta with NYC as preferred location. This role will expand your network and provide you with the chance to work with many different departments within the organization. As a Graduate Facultative Underwriter you will obtain broad exposure within the marketplace through client and broker interactions and visits.


You will evaluate deal submissions and cost and underwrite individual risks with the help of sophisticated pricing and modeling tools. This role is ideal for a person with entrepreneurial skillset who is comfortable working in a dynamic, results oriented environment. You will be expected to complete both the requirements of the Graduates program as well as work towards an industry designation such as Certified Property & Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) or Associate in Reinsurance (ARe). 



About the team

The Facultative team is part of Swiss Re's core reinsurance operation in the Americas. As an independent business unit it operates across the United States and Canada with larger offices in New York City, Chicago, Atlanta and Toronto.  The team consists of highly experienced underwriters providing reinsurance solutions for large commercial risks of varying complexity. Our clients range from global insurance companies to regional carriers transacting with us directly or through reinsurance brokers.


About You

We are looking for a candidate with a degree in Business, Finance, Economics, Risk Management, Actuarial Science, or other degree with a major that demonstrates robust quantitative fundamentals. Communications and negotiation courses will be highly beneficial


  • Strong interest in/motivation to learn about property and casualty underwriting
  • Fast learner, approaches problems with curiosity and open-mindedness
  • Team-player, willingness to contribute actively to the overall team objectives
  • Financial acumen and strong analytical and quantitative skills. Can focus on details without losing track of the bigger picture.
  • Mature & self-confident; Able to interact professionally with clients, business partners or senior colleagues. Aptitude to conduct business negotiations and make deal decisions.
  • Ability to handle a high level of work output and working under tight deadlines
  • Interest and enthusiasm to work in a global and multicultural environment
  • Excellent oral and written English skills; additional language skills advantageous, in particular
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
  • Very good communication and interpersonal skills
