About the role

This role within the Group Economic Research and Strategy (GERS) team is a unique opportunity to work on projects with a tangible business impact. It is a broad professional growth opportunity and a stepping stone within the company with exposure to management and other teams across the Group. In this position you will work as part of a global team contributing to the research agenda of the Swiss Re Institute (SRI) and also support the planning and marketing activities of the Americas business unit.

Key tasks and responsibilities include:

  • Analyze insurance market trends and provide related analysis and forecasts. Closely monitor and assess economic, regulatory and financial market developments affecting insurance markets.
  • Analyze macroeconomic variables (e.g. GDP growth, inflation, interest rates, etc) and contribute to forecasts and publications (e.g. US macro newsletter).
  • Contribute to Swiss Re's thought-leadership topics and client outreach through thematic research and publications (e.g. sigma, Expertise Publications, Economic Insights, etc).
  • Prepare high-quality presentations, and present findings to internal and external partners (e.g. presenting a market outlook, preparing briefing materials for senior executives, presenting research results at industry conferences, etc.)
  • Conduct research projects to completion independently with minimal direct supervision and guidance.
  • Most activities involve collaboration with other teams across the Group requiring excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Projects may be related to quantifying and modelling the impact of economic factors. (e.g. inflation, cat losses, health care expenses). Strong data affinity and statistical analysis skills are critical, hands-on experience with a statistical software package and/or a programming language an advantage.
  • Support Group Chief Economist and Group projects.

About the team

GERS is part of the SRI and is responsible for analysing and forecasting the global macroeconomic and insurance market environment. GERS holds a crucial role in steering Swiss Re's capital allocation for both sides of the balance sheet. The team also drives thought leadership on topics of strategic importance for the Group and helps shaping the policy dialogue and outcome. GERS is responsible for Swiss Re's flagship sigma publication series.

GERS is highly visible and interacts with a wide variety of key partners and decision makers across the organization and externally. We are a global team located in Zurich, New York, Hong Kong and Beijing and collaborate closely with all of Swiss Re's re/insurance business units and Group functions.

About you

  • Ph.D. or masters degree in economics or related field with 3-5 years of analytical work experience.
  • Experience and strong interest in macroeconomic analysis and forecasting.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Independent and able to operate with minimal level of guidance, while collaborating with stakeholders across the organization.
  • Capable to communicate effectively with senior managers as well as with people with different backgrounds.
  • Team player, comfortable working with colleagues across all different levels.
  • Desire to work in a fast-paced international environment.
  • Ability to think strategically while creating detailed, high quality deliverables.
  • Proactive attitude, commitment to continuous learning and willingness to challenge the status quo to improve processes.
