About the role:

  • Responsible for the management of a significant and diversified US Financial Lines treaty reinsurance portfolio in conjunction with the respective Client Markets and Products Center teams and according to the Strategic and Financial Plans for the portfolio.
  • Implement appropriate guidelines and processes to improve productivity while ensuring relevant underwriting standards for the US Financial Lines Treaty Reinsurance portfolio.
  • Anticipate and fulfill clients' needs and provide value added services and products
  • Lead the US Financial Lines underwriting team, manage the team and processes accordingly
  • Set and execute underwriting and portfolio strategies consistent with the Target Liability Portfolio and sub-portfolio strategies set by Global Financial Lines Portfolio Owners
  • Work closely with the Financial Lines Portfolio Owners and actively participate on the Global Financial Lines Reinsurance Cross-Functional Team (XFT).  
  • Manage change effectively, in terms of the processes and mindset for the Financial Lines segment
  • Be an active member of the US/Canada Casualty Hub Management Team, and the US Client Management Leadership Teams.

Main Tasks:


  • Represent and position Swiss Re as a strong Financial Lines reinsurance market, interacting with all stakeholders (clients, brokers, regulators, associations)
  • Execute Financial Lines goals through strong leadership, active team participation and strong cross-functional collaboration
  • Manage the US Financial Lines treaty reinsurance underwriting team to achieve individual and team goals and to thrive in performance-based culture.
  • Represent Financial Lines within the US Casualty Hub and be an active member of the US Casualty Leadership team.

Client Markets  

  • Establish strong relationships with clients, and ensure clients centric thinking within team
  • Increase market profile of Swiss Re and underwriting team by hosting events, speaking at conferences, publishing papers, etc.
  • Provides product support to clients as requested by Client Markets
  • Provide technical training and services to clients.


  • Manage the portfolio and set and execute appropriate strategies for assigned portfolio
  • Monitor the risk landscape to ensure that Swiss Re underwriting strategy is aligned with the environment
  • Make underwriting decisions within delegated authority level, and effectively escalate cases exceeding Hub authority
  • Uphold underwriting standards and ensure risks are within our defined risk appetite; underwriting beyond tools and guidelines, make underwriting decisions in the best interest of Swiss Re
  • Ensure realistic costing and removal of biases (positive and negative) in costing assumptions through work with the Parameter Task Force (PTFs)
  • Establish or continue regular discussion/feedback loops with Business Management (Claims, Reserving, Portfolio Management, Risk management)
  • Manage the appropriate delegation of underwriting authorities for US Financial Lines team in collaboration with Financial Lines Products Center (Portfolio Owners). Ensure proper documentation in Swiss Re Authority Database (SRAD)

Talent Management

  • Ensure underwriters have the necessary skills needed for current and future challenges, and foster professional development
  • Recruit, train and retain underwriting talent
  • Identify underwriting training needs, develop and execute technical training plans
  • Develop Graduates to the highest of their abilities and provide training on Financial Lines
  • Support and encourage job rotations and other developmental exchanges of underwriters
  • Assign underwriters to lead and/or contribute to Financial Lines related initiatives and projects


  • Meet direct costs as outlined in budget plan
  • Continually improve productivity of the team performance through prioritization, simplification, business growth, and/or other means
  • Pro-actively manage operations risks (self-identify issues, incident reporting, drive learning from mistakes, engage with assurance functions in a non-defensive way)
  • Ensure ORM compliance and contribute to the ORM process for underwriting activities
  • Support Finance in local compliance activities, risk and capital management, retrocession, etc.

About the Team:

The US Financial Lines Treaty Team is a line of business specialist team in the Casualty Treaty Underwriting Division focused on profitable origination and underwriting of Directors and Officers, Errors and Omissions, Professional Liability, Cyber, and Transactional Risk treaty business for Swiss Re.  The team handles all client segments, including Globals, Regional, and Specialty and is market and broker facing.  The team is fast paced, highly collaborative, and is recognized as a market leader.


Preferred location is Armonk, NY; however, we are open to other locations based on candidate's experience. 

About You:

  • You have 10 or more years of Financial Lines underwriting experience. Primary insurance and treaty reinsurance experience is preferred.
  • You have established and productive relationships with key Financial Lines reinsurance brokers
  • You have strong management and leadership skills
  • You have strong collaboration and team building skills
  • You have superior communication skills and ability to work with remote team and within a global matrix organization
  • You have outstanding coaching and technical skills, and the ability to assess the skills of others
  • You have broad market and product knowledge
