About the Role


Are you striving to apply your science or engineering background to increase society's resilience against natural catastrophes? Are you motivated to reduce the insurance protection gap by contributing to the development of novel solutions and commercial products? Are you interested in a role that will provide a stepping stone to long-term career advancement opportunities within the re/insurance sector (e.g. in underwriting, risk management or innovative risk solution design)?


As a graduate embedded in the Catastrophe Perils and Cyber team, you will

  • join our efforts to develop state-of-the-art models used for quantifying physical and economic impacts of natural catastrophes.
  • collaborate with internal partners and external organizations and craft solutions to reduce negative consequences of catastrophes.
  • build and commercialize innovative products and solutions to expand Nat Cat resilience in the financial sector
  • leverage novel technologies such as remote sensing and machine learning to evaluate exposure to natural hazards
  • have opportunities to transition into a wide range of technical and non-technical roles and advance your career in the financial industry.

About the Team

The Catastrophe Perils and Cyber team is responsible for Swiss Re's global risk assessment framework and related client services in three locations across the globe. We are accountable for developing and disseminating Swiss Re's view of Nat Cat risk. To achieve this, we develop and utilize state-of-the-art probabilistic models for assessing impacts of natural catastrophes such as windstorms, earthquakes and floods. We operate with a clear business mandate to grow Swiss Re's visionary edge in natural perils (re)insurance in close cooperation with underwriters and clients.


About You

  • Successfully completed Master' degree or Ph.D., preferably in natural sciences, engineering, or a related technical field
  • Strong interest in/motivation to learn about insurance/reinsurance
  • Exceptional academic performance
  • Strong computing and programming skills (e.g. Matlab, Python, R); knowledge about structured databases (SQL) and geographical information systems (GIS) a plus
  • Approaches problems with curiosity and open-mindedness, is a fast learner
  • Innovative, showing a high degree of own initiative
  • Team-player, willingness to contribute actively to the overall team spirit
  • Ability and enthusiasm to work in a global and multicultural environment, and to be mobile in terms of workplace or location if required
  • Mature & self-confident; Able to work with clients, business partners or senior colleagues
  • Capacity to readily adapt to a changing and dynamic environment
  • Proven expertise to work independently and proactively
  • Strong analytical skills and can focus on details without losing track of the bigger picture
  • Excellent oral and written English skills; additional language skills advantageous, in particular Spanish
  • Very good communication and interpersonal skills (e.g., ability to summarize complex topics to a broad audience)
