About the role

We are seeking a highly motivated, senior data scientist with management experience to lead a regional team of analytics professionals who support the digital transformation of Swiss Re and the insurance industry. As a Chapter Lead you will act as a player-coach for 8-10 data scientists, advising them on approaches and guiding their professional development while also having the opportunity to work on own projects.  You will be primarily based in Armonk or Toronto with the possibility to occasionally work from other Swiss Re offices (e.g. New York City) and collaborate with stakeholders around the globe.

 

Your main responsibilities are:

  • Actively create and sustain the chapter culture based on agile leadership behaviors
  • Lead a team of data scientists by providing guidance on approaches, projects, and skill development
    • Advance internal data science capabilities providing feedback, coaching and career development
    • Drive performance management processes including project reviews with product owners
    • Ensure consistent quality, efficiency and effectiveness of model development and deployment
    • Collect relevant staffing, workforce, and project information to enable effective capacity and capability steering
    • Lead the build-up of a new local advanced analytics team in Toronto
  • Independently lead and deliver analytics projects while guiding and supervising other analytics specialists
    • Develop a deep understanding of the business problem to derive suitable analytics approaches and requirements together with business partners and product owners
    • Build prototypes to validate desirability, viability, and feasibility of the proposed approach
    • Validate, interpret, and present findings and solutions to both expert and non-expert audiences
    • Support full deployment of analytics solutions into operational environments
  • Support the adoption and development of advanced analytics capabilities to drive the digital transformation of Swiss Re and the insurance industry
    • Promote and share digital & smart analytics knowledge, skills and services internally and externally
    • Work closely with internal stakeholders and clients to ideate, develop, and deploy innovative analytics solutions
    • Continuously monitor relevant industry and technology trends to ensure further development of Swiss Re's analytics capabilities
    • Collaborate closely with business partners, product owners, and other chapter leads to ensure global alignment on analytics priorities, capabilities, approaches, and best practices
    • Strengthen the engagement with clients and internal stakeholders in Canada

 

About the team

The Advanced Analytics Center of Expertise (AA CoE) supports Swiss Re's business functions and clients in developing state of the art technology solutions leveraging our advanced analytics and data engineering capabilities. The AA CoE works with all business units to implement Swiss Re's tech strategy by generating unique insights, improving operational efficiency, and developing new technology driven value propositions. Our integrated global team of analytics consultants, data scientists and data engineers enables us to facilitate end-to-end solutions delivery from ideation and prototyping to deployment and run. As Swiss Re's center of competence for advanced analytics, the AACoE further enables the proliferation of advanced data handling capabilities throughout the company.

 

About You

Technical Requirements:

  • Advanced degree (master's degree or PhD) with quantitative background (data science, applied mathematics or statistics, computer science, engineering, econometrics or another related field)
  • Proven track record of people management and leadership (experience with agile methods preferred)
  • 5+ years of experience in analytics (machine learning, statistics, natural language processing, computer vision, information retrieval) in research and/or corporate environment.
  • Experience in at least one scripting or programming language (e.g. Python, R, Matlab, Perl, Java), proficiency in relational databases and SQL (experience with large data sets and distributed computing is a plus).
  • Sound experience in software engineering methods and techniques preferred (e.g. SCRUM/agile methods, code versioning, unit testing)
  • High level of analytical problem-solving skills and ability to assimilate complex information as well as experience in building and deploying innovative solutions
  • Excellent English language skills, other languages (e.g. German, Spanish, Chinese) are a plus
  • Experience in leading project teams and engaging with senior leaders as well as clients
  • Flexibility to travel

  • Team player with strong interpersonal skills and experience of working in cross-functional teams
  • Ability to communicate complex problems with clarity and effectiveness to expert and non-expert audience
  • Ability to initiate and drive projects to completion with minimal guidance
  • Track-record of creative problem solving as well as openness and curiosity to learn
