About the Role 

A Property Treaty Underwriter at Swiss Re is responsible for the underwriting and pricing assessment of large portfolios of risk written by our primary insurance company clients. Reinsurance underwriters working in the North America Property team have a broad range of responsibilities that include the qualitative analysis of an insurance company's operations, actuarial work associated with pricing a treaty, insurance market research to stay abreast of industry trends, and investment in scientific, meteorological, and engineering knowledge related to natural and man made catastrophes. The role is wide ranging and offers an opportunity to work with our insurance company partners of all sizes across the United States.

Specifically, this role will:

  • Underwrite and price property reinsurance treaties within the North American market through broker and direct channels with support from senior underwriters and actuaries
  • Use actuarial methods to experience and exposure rate property treaties
  • Develop structuring skills to assess appropriate reinsurance structures tailored to meet a client's needs and in line with our risk appetite.
  • Review reinsurance treaty contracts, ensuring adherence to Swiss Re underwriting standards.
  • Accompany senior underwriters at client and broker meetings including underwriting audits
  • Work in cross functional teams to provide value added services and solutions to our clients
  • Some travel will be required


About the Team 

This role is a part of the North America Property Treaty team. Located throughout the United States and Canada, this team is responsible for developing Swiss Re's property treaty reinsurance strategy for North America and implementation of that strategy through underwriting, pricing, and portfolio steering. The team is made up of highly skilled underwriters, actuaries, and catastrophe modelers of all backgrounds who work in close collaboration the Client Markets, Claims, Accounting, Reserving, Business Services, and Solutions teams. This team has a passion for personal and professional development and work hard during peak renewal periods to serve our clients.


About You 

  • Successfully completed university degree, preferably with studies in insurance, engineering or a quantitative subject (math, actuarial science, finance)
  • Strong interest in/motivation to learn about insurance/reinsurance
  • Strong analytical skills and can focus on details without losing track of the bigger picture.
  • Demonstrated ability to clearly communicate complex details in an easy to understand manner.
  • Innovative, showing a high degree of own initiative
  • Collaborative, demonstrating a strong desire to work with and learn from others, and share those lessons across the team, while also being able to work independently and proactively.
  • Ability and enthusiasm to work in a global and multicultural environment
  • Aptitude to express themselves effectively in one-on-one conversations and small groups
  • Mature & self-confident; Able to work with clients, business partners and senior colleagues
  • Excellent oral and written English skills
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel. Experience with Microsoft Access or basic common coding skills are preferred.
