About the role

 

As a member of the Catastrophe Perils team, you will join our efforts to develop state-of-the-art models used for quantifying physical and economic impacts of natural catastrophes. You will collaborate with internal partners and external organizations from various disciplines and craft solutions to reduce negative consequences of catastrophes. You will have opportunities to transition into a wide range of technical and non-technical roles and advance your career in the financial industry.

 

In your role as a Senior Natural Catastrophe (Nat Cat) Specialist with expertise related to atmospheric and/or climate driven perils, you will:

  • Own and advance our view of climate-driven risks in the Americas with a focus on hurricanes, severe convective storms, wildfires, droughts, and winter storms
  • Develop and apply insurance market expertise to support business units in underwriting, risk appetite and portfolio steering decisions
  • Contribute to Swiss Re's thought leadership on climate change impacts and act as a liaison between Swiss Re and the academic community
  • Lead in developing tools/technology for evaluation of exposures and losses from all types of natural catastrophes
  • Build and commercialize innovative insurance products and solutions to expand climate resilience in the financial sector
  • Collaborate with underwriting and engineering teams to review and assess vulnerability to atmospheric or hydrological hazards

 

About the team

 

The Catastrophe Perils team is responsible for Swiss Re's global risk assessment framework, its application in underwriting decision taking, and related client services in three locations across the globe. We are accountable for developing and disseminating Swiss Re's view of Nat Cat risk. To achieve this, we develop and utilize state-of-the-art probabilistic models for assessing impacts of natural catastrophes such as windstorms, earthquakes and floods. We operate with a clear business mandate to grow Swiss Re's visionary edge and competitive advantage in natural perils re/insurance in close cooperation with underwriters and clients.

 

About you

 

  • 3+ years of experience working in a re/insurance or modelling company with a focus on Nat Cat risk
  • Re/insurance underwriting or portfolio steering experience a plus
  • Master's degree or Ph.D. in meteorology; applied physics; atmospheric, climate, or other natural sciences; or a related technical field. Experience in state-of-the-art applied research in atmospheric perils or climate science a plus
  • Strong computing and programming skills (e.g. Matlab, Python); knowledge about structured databases and geographical information systems a plus
  • Strong interest for career advancement in the financial industry
  • Highly motivated with an ability to effectively manage own time and priorities in a collaborative environment
  • High-level of curiosity to scout for new ideas and eagerness to transform them into products or services with commercial value
  • Strong communication and presentation skills and ability to explain complex problems with clarity and effectiveness
  • Excellent verbal and written English. Fluency in other languages a plus
