About the role

The Data Engineer will be a key member of the CITO Data Office team, focused on expanding and optimizing our data pipeline and architecture of the company-wide Data Lake. A data expert, the ideal candidate will have strong data analytical skills, being able to utilize data as an enabler with a clear passion for engineering, dev and data ops.


This role requires more than simple Data Engineering development from spec, you will be expected to take ownership of deliverables end to end taking on some Business Analyst functions to understand the source data and business logic required to transform the data into the Data Lake.


You will also be required to understand data modelling and the businesses data to help define and communicate the best data model design across each Pond within the Data Lake.

Responsibilities for Data Engineer

  • Create and maintain optimal data pipeline architecture.
  • Assemble large, complex data sets that meet functional / non-functional business requirements.
  • Work with stakeholders to assist with data-related technical issues and support their data infrastructure needs.

Work with data and analytics experts to strive for greater functionality in our data systems

About you

An experienced data engineer with minimum 7+ years' experience in


Soft skills

  • Experience in Devops / Dataops practices (Agile code management, sprints, continuous integration)
  • Experience performing root cause analysis on internal & external data and processes to answer specific business questions and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Strong analytic skills related to working with structured and unstructured datasets.
  • Building processes supporting data transformation, data structures, metadata, dependency and workload management.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.
  • Good commercial acumen, with a desire to understand detailed requirements and facilitate the process of analyzing solution options and comfortable with making strategic decisions.
  • Experience supporting and working with cross-functional teams in a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to communicate your understanding of requirements and objectives with your business partners at all levels.
  • Fluent in English.
  • Knowledge of the Insurance industry would be beneficial.


Mandatory Technical Skills

  • Production experience examples of change management tools (Jira etc)
  • Advanced data analysis knowledge with proven experience in the following;
    • Relational databases, query authoring (SQL) as well as working familiarity with a variety of databases.
    • NoSQL databases, including Postgres and Cassandra
    • Python, Java
  • Experience building and optimizing data pipelines in Spark ‘big data’ environment.
  • Experience working in Big Data architecture
    • Hadoop, HDFS, Kafka, etc
  • Experience in data modelling and the various methodologies (3nF, etc). Experience using a data modelling tool would be beneficial.
