About the role

Swiss Re Beijing is a composite carrier writing L&H and P&C business and is a branch of Swiss Re Zurich.  The position is based in our Beijing office, and reports to the Chief Actuary Beijing Branch.

The position will be responsible all local statutory reporting requirements for Swiss Re Beijing P&C business and supporting the Chief Actuary Beijing Branch in preparing statutory filings for the legal entity and engaging in other matters relating to regulator. The position will also play a key role in the evaluation and portfolio analysis in respect of China business.

  • Calculation of quarterly P&C loss reserves to enable group reporting of SRZ Beijing branch reserve estimation
  • Support other SRZ Beijing regulatory requirements of an actuarial nature
  • Make recommendations to appropriate regional reserve committee and local branch management
  • Provide support to the Chief Actuary Beijing Branch for actuarial matters as necessary
  • Support other areas of the company including Finance and Planning in relation to SRZ Beijing relevant issues
  • Support discussions with branch underwriting teams in relation to reserving feedback loops and other product analysis
  • Develop and maintain relationships with local actuarial and industry associations
  • Work with regulators and internal/external auditors on routine and special matters
  • Work on other projects as assigned including participating in internal underwriting audits

About the Team

Swiss Re's Property & Casualty (P&C) Business Management Actuarial & Reserving team is responsible for delivering 3 core mandates for the assigned regions and legal entities/branches:

1. Prepare quarterly reserving of the P&C in-force portfolio and portfolio steering

2. Complete statutory reporting to local regulator, and

3. Drive operational excellence.

The team works closely with other departments in the P&C community. Furthermore, we have interdependent relationships with other units within the Business Management division and is required to foster a strong team culture in order to drive delivery of the overall divisional mandate.


About you

  • Qualified Actuary
  • 8 years+ experience in a Property & Casualty environment (insurance/reinsurance)
  • 5 years+ experience in actuarial valuation or pricing
  • 3 years+ team or key project management experience
  • University degree in actuarial science or related field (mathematics or finance)
  • Very good understanding of actuarial, accounting, information systems and investments.
  • Solid knowledge of statutory and regulatory environments in China or equivalent regulations in other countries.  Knowledge of global accounting rules(IFRS17, USGAAP, EVM) would be viewed favourably
  • Practical experience with risk based capital frameworks
  • Independent self-starter
  • Strong practical capabilities in Microsoft Office and other business software applications. Hands-on experience in R or Python is preferred
  • Excellent project management skills
  • Accomplished interpersonal and communication skills – demonstrates a clear and articulate standard of written and verbal communication in a complex environment (English and Mandarin Chinese)
  • Excellent business sense and appreciation of sound risk management techniques
  • Proactive in seeking out and providing information
  • Actively looks to add value and take on additional responsibility
  • Ability to work under pressure and prioritize tasks accordingly
