About the Role


The role of Economist – Insurance analyst in Group Economic Research and Strategy with a focus on China market is an opportunity to work with industry experts within Swiss Re Institute (SRI) on global research projects with a tangible business impact. Based in SRI China centre in Beijing, a qualified candidate should have a deep understanding about Chinese economy and re/insurance market development in a structured manner. In the context of global economic growth while closely working with local economists, you should be capable to identify new risk pools (both P&C and L&H), emerging trends of re/insurance market and highlight business opportunities in China preferably through analytical tools or quantitative models. You will provide views on long-term insurance growth forecasts in China to formulate SRI's view on global insurance market growth and emerging trends. Your role will also support Swiss Re's business development from global to China by working closely with Swiss Re's business units across global regions. Depending on your expertise knowledge, you will be involved in various global research projects and possibly lead several China-specific research activities. The role is a unique, broad and exciting professional growth opportunity and an excellent stepping stone within the company with frequent exposure to senior management and other teams across the Group. As such, you will shape key strategic projects and drive Swiss Re's thought leadership, particularly around the topic of macro-economic resilience in China market development. You should expect a dynamic environment and should be able to demonstrate flexibility, adaptability and autonomy in your daily work.

Key tasks and responsibilities include:

-      Work on various research projects on China-specific topics, providing insights for re/insurance business development in China.

-      Drive Swiss Re's initiative projects in China, by coordinate with business units (across local, regional and headquarter) and key client managers (CM). This role may include but not limited to preparing analytical material for targeted purposes, dealing with ad-hoc requests from CMs, helping with hosting themed events in China, manage progress of cross-functional projects, etc.

-      Provide views on Chinese insurance market growth, trends and key topics, and estimate/forecast headline market growth variables (e.g. L&H/P&C) as well as growth rates by line of business. Closely monitor and assess economic, policy and regulatory developments.

-      Support Swiss Re's thought-leadership topics and client outreach by co-authoring publications (e.g. Swiss Re's sigma, Economic Insights, etc) and preparing high-quality and visually appealing presentations.

-      Support Group Chief Economist, Asia Chief Economist and Head of SRI China Center on various ad-hoc tasks (e.g. preparing presentation material, writing background notes, handling administrative tasks, etc).


About Team

Group Economic Research and Strategy (GERS) is part of the Swiss Re Institute and is responsible for analysing and forecasting the global macroeconomic and insurance market environment. GERS holds a crucial role in steering Swiss Re's capital allocation for both sides of the balance sheet. The team also drives thought leadership on topics of strategic importance for the Group and helps shaping the policy dialogue and outcome. GERS is responsible for Swiss Re's flagship sigma publication series.

SRI China Centre is a new established centre under GERS, located in Beijing and collaborates closely with a variety of Swiss Re's re/insurance business units locally and globally in order to support SR's business in China.

About You

-      A Master degree in Economics or related fields is required. A degree from another field is also possible, though excellent knowledge in Economics/Insurance is required.

-      At least 3-5 years of work experience in economic/insurance research or related areas is required.

-      Strong analytical skills and ability to focus on details without losing track of the bigger picture.

-      Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both English and Chinese.

-      Capable to communicate effectively with senior managers as well as with people with different backgrounds.

-      Proficiency in MS Office applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) is required.

-      Econometric and programming skills in one of the major statistical software/programming languages (R, Stata, Matlab, Python, EViews) is an advantage.

-      Internationally focused and highly motivated with a can-do attitude; dedication to continuous learning and willingness to challenge and improve the status quo.

-      Very agile, open-minded and curious personality with ability to work under tight timelines.

-      Mature and proactive; showing a high degree of own initiative.

-      Ability and enthusiasm to work in a global and multicultural environment.
