About the role

Position Summary/Purpose of Position

Casualty Treaty Underwriting China is looking for a highly motivated person to join the team. You will be part of a diverse and high performance team to bring in global expertise and capacity to facilitate the development of our clients and the general market. Main focus is to write profitable liability/PA/motor business as well as to contributing to Casualty strategy implementation.


Organizational Context & Scope

  • Performs high quality underwriting, steering value determination and deal structuring.
  • Helps ensure that Swiss Re's technical capabilities are leveraged in the relevant markets.
  • Collaborates with CM in fulfilling client needs and providing value added services and products. This includes designing tailor-made (re)insurance products.
  • Helps execute Product strategies (including Casualty strategies in China).
  • Adheres to guidelines and processes, and lives up to best underwriting standards.
  • Works in close collaboration with client markets, business development, actuaries and product line specialists to produce profitable treaty business.


Principal Accountabilities


  • Establishment and maintenance of specific industry sector know-how, build solid business cases and products
  • Carries out technical assessment, costing and reviews reinsurance terms and conditions of business under his/her responsibility
  • Makes sound underwriting decisions within his/her authority levels, and supports management decisions with relevant advice and information in cases exceeding his authority
  • Provides technical assessment to the Client Managers for their negotiations with clients, especially on structuring reinsurance programs and on implementing new, complex or critical underwriting measures
  • Leads, in cooperation with Market Underwriter/ Client Management team, product-specific business origination efforts



  • Involvement of specific projects within the Casualty strategy implementation
  • Conducts portfolio and Market analysis for portfolio steering and risk monitoring purpose
  • Monitors the risk landscape to ensure that Swiss Re’s underwriting strategy is aligned with the risk environment



  • Meets clients on regular basis, to provide product support and technical training when need arises
  • Collaborates with CM in fulfilling client needs and providing value added services and products. This includes designing tailor-made (re)insurance products.

About you

  • Minimum 8 years underwriting experience in primary insurance. Background in Liability business is essential. Preferably with regional /international exposure.
  • CPCU designation or similar
  • Deep industry understanding and insights into markets trends, legal and competitive landscape
  • Proactive team player with strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to deliver quality output on short deadlines
  • Self-motivated and ability to work independently
  • Demonstrated collaboration with extended team. Ability to work under high time pressure (seasonal), readiness to travel around the region (up to 20%)
