About the Role

The role of Economist – Macro Strategy in Group Economic Research and Strategy focus on China market is an opportunity for you to work on global research projects with a tangible business impact. Based in SRI China centre in Beijing, together with a high-caliber and motivated international team, you are expected to provide views on Chinese economic situation and identify key trends to formulate SRI's view on global economic growth and risk landscape. Your role will also support Swiss Re's business development from global to China and research collaboration with external parties. In addition, you will be highly involved in various global research projects with insurance experts across different regions and lead several China-specific research activities. The role is a unique, broad and exciting professional growth opportunity and an excellent stepping stone within the company with frequent exposure to senior management and other teams across the Group. As such, you will shape key strategic projects and drive Swiss Re's thought leadership, particularly around the topic of macro-economic resilience in China market development. You should expect a dynamic environment and should be able to demonstrate flexibility, adaptability and autonomy in your daily work.

Key tasks and responsibilities include:

- Initiate and lead research projects on China-specific topics, providing insights for re/insurance business development in China.

- Coordinate and manage research partnership with external parties in China (including universities, think tanks, industry association and key clients) .

- Provide views on global and Chinese economic growth, trends and key topics, and estimate/forecast key economic variables (e.g. GDP growth, inflation, interest rates, central banks, etc). Closely monitor and assess economic, political and financial market developments.

- Contribute to Group capital allocation initiatives (e.g. Group Planning activities, macro-economic scenario analysis, etc) by leveraging research on China.

- Support Swiss Re's thought-leadership topics and client outreach by co-authoring publications (e.g. Swiss Re's sigma, Economic Insights, etc) and preparing high-quality and visually appealing presentations.

- Support Group Chief Economist, Asia Chief Economist and Head of SRI China Center on various ad-hoc tasks (e.g. preparing presentation material, writing background notes, handling administrative tasks, etc).

About the Team

Group Economic Research and Strategy (GERS) is part of the Swiss Re Institute and is responsible for analysing and forecasting the global macroeconomic and insurance market environment. GERS holds a crucial role in steering Swiss Re's capital allocation for both sides of the balance sheet. The team also drives thought leadership on topics of strategic importance for the Group and helps shaping the policy dialogue and outcome. GERS is responsible for Swiss Re's flagship sigma publication series.

 

SRI China Centre is a new established centre under GERS, located in Beijing and collaborates closely with a variety of Swiss Re's re/insurance business units locally and globally in order to support SR's business in China.

About You

-      A Master degree in Economics or related field.. A degree from another field is also possible, though excellent knowledge in Economics/Finance is required.

-      At least 4-7 years of work experience in economic research, asset management or related area with a deep understanding on Chinese economy and a certain knowledge about insurance/reinsurance industry.

-      Strong analytical skills and ability to focus on details without losing track of the bigger picture.

-      Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both English and Chinese.

-      Ability to break down, communicate and visualize often complex concepts in an easy and digestible way.

-      Proficiency in MS Office applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) is required.

-      Econometric and programming skills in one of the major statistical software/programming languages (R, Stata, Matlab, Python, EViews) is an advantage.

-      Internationally focused and highly motivated with a can-do attitude; dedication to continuous learning and willingness to challenge and improve the status quo.

-      Very agile, open-minded and curious personality with ability to work under tight timelines.

-      Mature and proactive; showing a high degree of own initiative.

-      Ability and enthusiasm to work in a global and multicultural environment.
