About the Role

The role supports Head Risk Management Life and Health Asia in executing the mandates and carrying out responsibilities delegated from the Chief Risk Officer Reinsurance Asia.  With the exposure to the fast growing, largely heterogeneous Asian markets, the successful candidate will be able to develop an in-depth understanding of the Life and Health (L&H) business and risk landscape.

 

You are responsible for identifying, analysing, mitigating and monitoring L&H insurance risks issues across all risk factors in Asia, helping the business not only steer away from risks that could destabilise Swiss Re, but also identify risks worth taking, in existing and new risk pools.

 

In fulfilling these responsibilities, you will:

  • Provide advice in transactions on potential risk impact, to ensure that Swiss Re accepts the most appropriate business within defined risk appetite. This will include reviewing new product and transaction proposals in Asia, with a particular focus on large and structured transactions
  • Support assurance activities/reviews to assess the quality of expert judgment of the business (reviews of Asia Terms of trade, participation in Insurance Risk Reviews and reviews of costing models)
  • Support risk identification (including emerging risks) to facilitate forward looking strategies for future risk opportunities and/or risk mitigations
  • Ensure risk and capacity limits are in place and regularly review Swiss Re's exposures and aggregation of those risks against the limits
  • Report on material Asia L&H risks, to facilitate informed decision-making
  • Provide expertise and advice to help business partners balance business strategy with appropriate risk management, by fostering strong relationships with Client Management, Business Management and Products counterparts within the Asia L&H community
  • Promote risk awareness within the business
  • Review business plans
  • Represent Risk Management in key change initiatives within global L&H
  • Lead or participate in L&H relevant risk deep dives (including operational risk reviews) or projects that contribute towards enhanced understanding and mitigation of specific risks
  • Travel required occasionally, as well as attendance in global meetings that span multiple time zones

 

About the Team

Life and Health Risk Management (L&H RM) enables conscious and transparent risk-taking by proactively partnering and constructively challenging stakeholders, leveraging knowledge and experience, while offering an independent, global and long-term perspective to facilitate success across Swiss Re's Life and Heath (L&H) business.

 

The team is responsible for executing a comprehensive risk management strategy with other L&H business teams and support senior management in effective management of risk within their portfolio, ensuring Swiss Re's profitability and sustainable long-term growth, while protecting our reputation and financial strength.

 

About You  

  • Strong understanding of Life and Health reinsurance processes; experience working in multiple business functions and exposure to large and structured transactions are highly desirable
  • Ideally, a qualified actuary with at least 6 years of relevant life (re)insurance industry experience. Other quantitative backgrounds with suitable business experience will also be considered (university degree preferred)
  • Superior analytic and modeling abilities and sound risk management and actuarial techniques
  • Knowledge and understanding of risks and controls within a reinsurance environmen
  • Independent and critical thinking, willing to challenge constructively
  • Agile learner, open to new ways of thinking and new ideas; focused on continuous learning and bringing new information into your work
  • Great teammate, willingness to share knowledge and experience within and across team and other risk management functions
  • Strong communicator with great influencing and negotiation skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills (English is required; additional Asian languages will be an advantage)
