About the Role

We are looking for a confident, solution-oriented claim professional with experience handling and/or managing complex workers' compensation claims.

Swiss Re is an experienced group of insurance professionals who seek to understand and meet the needs of our insureds and brokers by providing the highest quality customer service.

As a member of Swiss Re Direct Claims and Client Review Team you will be responsible for your own docket of challenging excess workers' compensation and primary workers' compensation claims. This includes providing direct oversight/management of Swiss Re's TPA's.

From time to time, you may be responsible for managing virtual due diligence project teams tasked with evaluating reserve sufficiency and claim department processes/procedures for portfolio acquisition opportunities. Use and knowledge of Excel and its functionality are extremely important in how these portfolios are evaluated.  You will also be responsible for identifying and implementing sound strategies to profitably run-off the existing portfolio and any acquired portfolios as well as assist in the onboarding process of newly acquired portfolios.

The excess workers' compensation book features an indemnification policy under which the insured may become eligible for reimbursement of moneys paid on the underlying claim, subject to the policy provisions.  With limited supervision, but ample support, you will be expected to manage your claims from initial report through final resolution – including each step in between.  Our claim professionals interact with our insureds, brokers, attorneys and various workers' comp experts; provide direction to defense and coverage counsel; develop resolution strategies; and take an active role in mediations, settlement conferences and other dispute resolution processes.  In addition, it is imperative that you are proactive in identifying and using mitigation strategies to reduce future exposure.

About You

  • Familiarity with and understanding of excess work comp and/or work comp policies and practices in US.
  • Experience handling excess work comp and/or work comp claims – 10 years of experience as a claim handler is preferred.    Legal background could be a suitable substitute for claims experience. Strong California and Texas knowledge.
  • Strong negotiation skills as well as the ability to deal with insureds and their attorneys in the settlement of disputed claims.
  • Ability to be creative in mitigation strategies
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications, especially Excel
  • Ability to work effectively in various computer environments and systems
  • Texas Adjusters License, AIC, or CPCU would be beneficial
  • Ability to travel up to 10% of the time
