Swiss Re Institute (SRI) is an important differentiating component of. Swiss Re's strategy. SRI harnesses Swiss Re's risk knowledge to produce data driven research across the company and with partner organisations. SRI leverages R&D to ensure Swiss Re's capabilities remain cutting edge, maintain underwritting excellence and incubate new buisness models, product and services. We create and deliver transformational R&D and robust technological capabilites to generate data-driven insights on existing and new risk pools, and the economic context within which we operate.


The technology unit of SRI, SRI IT, is being ramped up to support SRI transformational mission and further accelerate the establishment of data-driven underwriting in Swiss Re.


While most of your peers and key partners are based in Zurich, your team is composed of an international workforce based in different locations and serving a global customer basis.


About The Role


As a Data Solution Engineer Lead for SRI, you will be working on several key initiatives using cutting edge data, analytics, cloud and integration technologies. Working with the SRI IT team, you will be involved in designing and developing multitude of products. You will be working with some of the brightest and smartest people who are set to make an impact to Swiss Re Underwriting.


The ideal person will be someone who can operate strategically and deliver tactical outcomes in complex projects, working side-by-side with our data engineers, data scientists and other technology professionals. This person will have a broad understanding of the state-of-the-art in solution development and has proven him/herself in designing modern data driven digital platforms, adhering to Agile methodologies.


In Particular, The Role Will Involve


Solution Engineering is chartered with establishing solution designs and right technical choices for the data and analytical requirements. Acting as an advisory function, Solution Engineering will help to engineer the current and near-future state of data, analytics and platforms landscape within SRI and Underwriting, fostering a data driven culture and enabling faster turnaround time for solutions.


Solution Engineering team members will be expected to have hands-on knowledge of various data technologies complemented with the understanding of various archetypes related to data solutions. Overall, we're looking for a passionate and innovative technologist to lead this area, with an ambitious mindset who can:


  • Solve technical problems of various levels of complexity and 'flight level', being able to gauge the big picture of a platform and dive into a component

  • Evaluate and shape technology alternatives as technology solutions, suiting business aspirations that span from individual use cases to larger initiatives

  • Work with data engineers, software engineers, data scientists, product and project managers to design and deliver state-of-the-art solutions and platforms

  • Help define and improve our data strategy and landscape

  • Stay on top of emerging trends and help the organization in making informed technology decisions


This position demands an ability to problem solve, prioritize, and communicate proactively. The ideal candidate will have experience working backwards from the product design to understand the true requirements underlying feature requests.


About You


  • Minimum 5+ years of work experience working as a solution lead or architect and BSc. or MS/PhD in computer science, engineering, information technology

  • Experience in defining complex end-to-end reference architectures for digital platforms, integrating multi-vendor components, data platforms (traditional DWH & data lakes) and custom data solutions

  • Experience in re-engineering and integrating custom developed solutions in Java, .NET, Python

  • Experience in designing custom data solutions in the Public cloud, using structured and unstructured data and advanced data analytics services

  • Hands on experience with big data cloud native services such as AWS EMR, Azure Databricks, HDInsight, Sagemaker etc.

  • Knowledge of various cloud data storage services such as AWS S3, ADLS Gen 2 etc. and NoSQL, Graph and streaming platforms, e.g. Kafka, MongoDB, Neo4j

  • Proficiency with APIs, containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes)

  • Deep understanding and expertise in using Spark with the experience of implementing maintainable, tested data pipelines using PySpark, spark SQL or Scala/Java

  • Familiarity with extraction, transformation and loading of data from a variety of data sources using SQL and other 'big data' technologies e.g. Elastic Stack (Search, Logstash, Kibana), Apache (Kafka), Azure Cognitive Services

  • Familiar with DevOps, preferably MLOps

  • Knowledge of OCR & Semantic technologies is a plus

  • Knowledge of Contract Lifecycle Mgmt vendors is a plus

  • Willingness to travel
