The responsibilities of the Energy Property Underwriter is to ensure profitable underwriting of the property line of business on behalf of Swiss Re of Energy risks headquartered in the USA.  "Energy" is defined as on-shore oil, gas, midstream and petrochemicals; power generation and distribution; and non-coal mining risks.  More specifically, the Energy property underwriter shall:


  • Interact with brokers and insureds to renew existing business and to source new business on behalf of Swiss Re Corporate Solutions, and represent Corporate Solutions at industry events and conferences.
  • Evaluate insurance submissions, negotiate final terms & conditions and bind deals on behalf of Swiss Re Corporate Solutions for Energy clients, including: risk evaluation; natural catastrophe assessment; comprehensive review of policy wordings; program structuring; costing & pricing deals; ensure contract certainty; and purchasing spot facultative reinsurance as necessary;
  • Interact and coordinate deal referrals with supporting units within Swiss Re including Products Underwriting Management; Contracts and Wordings, Claims, Risk Engineering Services; Natural Catastrophe Team, Legal, International Team etc. to ensure compliance with Swiss Re Underwriting standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Use Swiss Re proprietary costing and workflow tools.
  • Support various special projects to improve underwriting profitability, effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Assume technical leadership of important topics such as underwriting in key industry (i.e. power generation) or special coverages.
  • Help train new underwriters and support functions


The position location is flexible to one of the following offices: New York City, Houston, Los Angeles, or San Francisco.



  • The candidate must have at least 3-5 years' experience underwriting Energy property lines of business;
  • Strong inter-personal skills and ability to collaborate and coordinate with internal and external stakeholders.   
  • Strong entrepreneurial mindset and ability to work independently within a team.
  • In-depth knowledge of power generation, onshore Energy, mining and corporate insurance industries.
  • Background in risk assessment of both man-made and natural catastrophe risks.
  • Knowledge of standard Energy policy wordings and ability to amend manuscript policies in order to bring policy in line with industry standard wordings.
  • Knowledge of international property insurance placements.
  • Strong analytical skills and a background in statistics.  Use of Microsoft Excel, Word and Power Point are critical.
  • Results oriented with a friendly, collegial and open communication style.  
  • Fluent in English with strong written and oral communication skills.  Additional language skills are desirable.
  • Energy Industry and Project Management experience is highly appreciated.
  • Four year degree, with a minimum bachelor's degree from an accredited university, or equivalent. Additional professional designations and/or degrees such as PE, MS, MBA, CPCU, ARM are desirable.
  • Position will require 10-25% travel mostly in North America, and possibly some international travel.
