About the Role

As the Senior Products Underwriter, you will support FinPro Standard Products in delivering product leadership that drives profitability for the assigned lines of business (Professional Liability/Errors & Omissions for US and Canadian Insurance Agents and small/mid-sized Lawyers), in conjunction with the respective Underwriting teams.

You will provide subject matter expertise ensuring high quality underwriting, effective policy language, profitability, controllership, and product management. In cooperation with the appropriate business unit head, your role helps to ensure that Swiss Re Corporate Solution's technical capabilities are leveraged in the relevant markets.  You will be responsible for the assigned lines of business, developing and implementing appropriate guidelines, letters of authority and processes, and initiating measures to ensure high quality underwriting of the business.

Key accountabilities:

  • Products and Technical Underwriter for assigned lines of business.
  • Make underwriting decisions within assigned authority levels and manage the escalation of cases exceeding authority levels.
  • Create and recommend local underwriting guidelines for approval; ensure local guidelines are compliant with group guidelines and where needed, lead periodic comprehensive review of local underwriting guidelines and contributes to global guideline reviews.
  • Assist in the development and recommend approval of underwriting strategy including risk analysis, structuring, growth initiatives and capacity deployment primarily for US and Canadian Insurance Agents E&O but also in a support of the US Lawyers E&O business.
  • Support underwriting in drafting policy language and to ensure appropriate usage of policies, endorsements, pricing, reporting and underwriting tools.
  • Continually fine tune existing and assess new, innovative, simple and easy-to-understand insurance products in the Agents and Lawyers segment.
  • Shepherd new policy language through legal and filings teams.
  • Collaborate with the business units, actuarial Services, and the data science team to assure the development of pricing methodologies and tools necessary to support primarily Insurance Agents but also US Lawyers E&O.
  • Provide support for various audits including external distribution partners, annual intrateam underwriting audits as well as the occasional Business Risk Review "BRR" and Group Internal Audit "GIA" audits.
  • Validate underwriting's plan for assigned lines. Provides input to, and assesses the feasibility of, underwriting's business plans of assigned lines and new product initiatives.
  • Support FinPro Products activities to achieve cycle management goals for assigned lines. Contributes to periodic in-depth portfolio analyses and provides ad-hoc reports on latest underwriting developments; analysis, assessment or compilation of underwriting driven reports on a qualitative and quantitative basis.
  • Identify underwriting training needs, develop and execute technical training plans in support of Insurance Agents and Lawyers E&O Underwriters.

About You

  • You have demonstrated professional liability/E&O expertise through 10 years of professional liability underwriting. (Any excess and surplus lines experience as well as claims experience would also be very valuable but not a must).
  • You understand, and can assess the quality of, complex quantitative analysis.
  • You will have an open-minded, intellectually curious approach to everything you do; and you are likely someone who is continually learning from a variety of sources.
  • You communicate clearly and simply – even when dealing with complicated problems and ideas – and you do so both orally and in writing. When interacting with colleagues of every level of seniority and experience, you are empathetic and sensitive, and you adjust your communication style to meet the needs of others.
  • You are collaborative in nature and a strong team player but also have a high level of self-motivation and the ability to work independently.
  • You take on problems strategically in a structured way, integrating your own original and creative ideas and those of others.
  • Willingness to travel domestically several times a year with occasional international travel a possibility.
