About the role


This position will lead the strategic and tactical development and performance of the Greater China Casualty Portfolio, in line with agreed business strategy and performance targets. 


The main responsibilities are:

  • Represents Swiss Re’s brand in the market, contributes to position the company and preserves Swiss Re’s excellent reputation as a business partner and employer.
  • Is responsible for setting the strategic direction, financial business plan targets and the execution of profitable Financial Lines/Casualty business in Greater China.
  • Formulates ambitious, achievable and measurable targets for the Casualty/Financial Lines business, to ensure the maximizing of economic profit
  • Shares knowledge with other branches and headquarters on effective practices, competitive intelligence, business opportunities and needs
  • Takes full management accountability of all aspects of the Greater China Casualty portfolio (large GL, Financial Lines, SME) of the market and client relationships (including Brokers), in close cooperation with Sales, regional LoB Head, etc
  • Responsible for talent supply, development, performance management, retention and succession planning for the casualty team
  • Works closely with CUO and other functions to ensure successful delivery and implementation of the Greater China Strategic Initiatives, in particular takes a lead role to support Casualty related Strategic Initiatives.
  • Sets up efficient and effective procedures to run Casualty Greater China, ensures compliance with Group Underwriting and Contract Guidelines, with ORM and SOX requirements as well as with external legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Proactively communicates market intelligence to the Greater China and regional leadership team


       Client focus (includes Brokers)

  • Drives Sales Leadership of the Casualty China team, to become the Casualty individual risk port of call for clients and brokers in China
  • Segments the market and other business sources and allocates resources and services in the most effective way, in cooperation with CUO, Sales and regional LoB responsibilities


       Business focus

  • Proactive in marketing Swiss Re’s risk appetite and presence.
  • Develops new business opportunities; promotes the development of leading edge products and solutions.
  • Ensures and profitability and continuity of casualty/financial lines business
  • Co-ordinates marketing activities with other departments.
  • Reviews financial results and performance metrics and escalates issues as required.
  • Informs sales colleagues of market intelligence.


About the team


You will spend the majority of your time leading the development and management of the Casualty portfolio, liaising with clients and intermediairies, contributing to marketing and business development activities and providing technical knowledge and expertise.  You will deal with customers and third parties on a one to one basis, although you will also work with other colleagues as part of the Greater China business and the Casualty APAC team.  You will use your strong strategic thinking, planning and relationship management skills to take a strategic view across and make commercial decisions regarding your portfolio.


About you


The most relevant criteria for this position are the following: 

  • University degree or above
  • 15 years practical insurance and/or reinsurance industry experience with min. 10 years focus on individual risk underwriting and portfolio management, preferably in financial lines.
  • Sound track record in managing and leading large high performing team of underwriters
  • Strong knowledge of the Greater China insurance market.
  • Strong problem solving capabilities and project management skills
  • Familiarity and compliance with industry’s rules and regulations
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills
  • Experience in operating in a multinational environment.
  • Fluent oral and written English and Mandarin
  • Physical Demands (not mandatory)
