Legal Counsel

About the Role 


The primary focus is providing support to the Head Legal ANZ and providing legal and compliance services to Swiss Re’s (re)insurance operations in ANZ which includes life and health reinsurance, property & casualty reinsurance, as well as direct general insurance. This involves identifying and managing legal and compliance risks in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.

 

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Providing strategic legal advice, clearly articulating legal and compliance risks and opportunities;

  • Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating commercial and legal documents, including re/insurance agreements;

  • Performing legal research and prepare legal opinions;

  • Assisting with corporate secretarial services for local Boards;

  • Managing legal aspects of projects, regulatory changes, and strategic initiatives within ANZ;

  • Collaborating with regional and global legal teams on projects and common legal risks; and

  • Develop and implement efficient legal practices, conduct training, and manage outside counsel relationships.

 

About You

 

  • Qualified Australian lawyer with a current NSW Practicing Certificate;

  • Proven experience in top-tier legal firms or in-house legal teams, specialising in financial services, re/insurance, and regulatory matters;

  • Track record of managing complex workloads, competing priorities, and multiple projects across multidisciplinary teams and jurisdictions.

  • Strong collaboration skills, working effectively within teams and with internal and external stakeholders, including advising and instructing external counsel across ANZ.

  • Demonstrates accountability, resilience, and flexibility, with a proactive approach to new ideas and solutions; and

  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.

 

 

About the Team

 

The Legal & Compliance team in ANZ comprises of a number of qualified Legal Counsels, each with a different focus. We provide legal and compliance services as well as corporate secretarial and corporate governance support for the local business operations. We work collaboratively and have a strong team spirit both locally and as part of the greater L&C team.
