Job Profile


Strengthening Transactions is one of the three strategic pillars in our reinsurance strategy.  L&H transactions Japan is the leader in the region with our ability to innovate, originate and execute.


This is a great opportunity to join this expanding team as it aims to cement our dominance in the market.  It is a challenging role offering excellent opportunities to further developing the Japan market for capital driven life & health structured solutions whilst developing both a deep technical knowledge of structured transactions and a very wide range of soft skills (such as client interactions, project management, negotiations and communication). It also provides extensive exposure to the senior management of Swiss Re.


< Job Purpose >

  • To support the growth of Life & Health financial solutions in the Japan market.
  • The role is client facing and requires the ability to identify opportunities and implement client specific business strategies to grow the product line.


< Key Accountabilities >

The primary responsibility of this role will be to originate and support the execution of L&H financial transactions in Japan. This includes:

  • To develop strategic dialogue with those responsible for managing risk and capital at our clients in Japan
  • In close collaboration with Business Development and Structured Solutions departments to initiate and maintain dialogue with clients on regulatory, accounting and fiscal matters with the aim of providing bespoke solutions to their needs
  • Be aware of the "financial" issues facing our clients and actively develop solutions that are relevant to those issues
  • To have a deep understanding of the Japan market both in respect of client needs but also regulatory requirements.
  • To build a strong network of contacts including clients, consultants, actuarial consultants, regulatory bodies and banks to create a strong market presence.
  • To have a strong understanding of the competitive environment.
  • To coach and develop others in the Tokyo office as a source of technical and commercial knowledge and advice.
  • Fostering a strong team spirit of innovation and execution orientation.

Accountable to:  Head L&H Client Markets

Works within:  Client Markets, Products, L&H Structured Solutions

Liaises with:  Clients, other actuaries, across teams and Business Groups


< About Life & Health Financial Solutions Initiative >

The Financial Solutions Initiative in Asia is an initiative that sits across both client markets and  Products Underwriting and focuses on:

  • Provision of structured reinsurance & capital management solutions to L&H clients
  • Assuming life insurance risk in non-traditional formats 


The candidate will work with colleagues in many different areas, in particular Client Markets, Business Development and the different L&H teams both throughout Asia and in London/Zurich.  As such, the following will be key:

  • Ability to work with different cultures in Swiss Re Tokyo 
  • Ability to develop trust with different regionally based colleagues
  • Collaborative approach and strong team spirit
  • the ability to influence others in an environment of scarce resources and competing priorities


Expected skills/knowledge 

  • 10 years industry experience
  • Qualified actuary, CFA or accountant, or a strong technical understanding of structured transactions in the L&H space, with good work experience
  • Familiar with life insurance business from a financial perspective and capital management concepts - understanding of risk based & regulatory capital frameworks would be beneficial
  • Understanding of embedded value and/or EVM
  • Excellent communications skills, both oral and written in English and Japanese
  • Ability to build and maintain a strong network of contacts in the Japan market
  • Good understanding of the dynamics of building effective working relationships to gain the confidence and respect of clients and colleagues
  • Strong analytical skills to be able to review complex issues and be able to explain effectively to clients and colleagues
  • Proven sales skills

The ideal candidate will have the balance of both strong technical skills, with the ability to step back to view “the big picture” strategic goals in the context of the wider market environment.
