About the role

We are looking for a pro-active, highly motivated and result oriented Market Underwriter.  You will be responsible for high quality underwriting, account and client management. As a "one stop shop" you would serve our Japanese Regional&National and Large clients' treaty business for P&C Lines.


You will engage in frequent dialogue with brokers and clients on strategic, financial and technical topics, building long term relationships. With an entrepreneurial mindset, you will identify and originate new opportunities to support your clients, differentiating Swiss Re and delivering the full value of the organization.



Main tasks

  • Develop and champion client relations across the full range of experience from expert to senior management levels
  • Identify opportunities with existing and new clients to grow the business and develop bespoke reinsurance deals in conjunction with relevant specialists
  • Perform end-to-end underwriting analysis for proportional and non-proportional treaty business, including pricing, contracts review and basic structuring for various lines of business
  • Evaluate and assess risks in accordance with company guidelines and standards, make underwriting decisions within respective authority level
  • Negotiate annual renewal and new business, apply consultative sales techniques to identify clients' needs and deploy services as applicable
  • Build, maintain and further develop a strong internal and external network, including relationships with clients, brokers and industry associations
  • Gather and internally share market intelligence (trends in buying behaviors and competitors undertakings); attend conferences and market events

The P&C Client Markets team is responsible for Swiss Re's Property, Casualty and Special Lines business relationships in Japan. We are an experienced and cohesive community focused to deliver best-in-class service for our clients' delight and our personal growth. You will closely work with a well-experienced cross-functional team of a fellow Market Underwriter, Treaty Underwriters, Solutions Specialists, Client Managers, Business Development, Contracts and Claims professionals.  Part of the team's role is to ensure that all team members are fully aligned and committed to the defined strategy. You would report directly to the Head P&C Client Markets and with a strong dotted line to the Head of Underwriting.


About you

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent preferable in Engineering, Actuarial or Natural Science
  • 3 years of experience or more in the insurance industry
  • Client focused (understand needs and act on them), strong communication skills (comfortable to engage with clients and brokers)
  • Strong quantitative/analytical skills, underwriting judgement and experience with risk selection/evaluation as well as a flair for wording and costing issues
  • Consultancy skills (listen, ask right questions and "connect the dots"), coupled with financial acumen and relevant corporate finance knowledge
  • solid negotiation and sales skills, ability to successfully handle conflicts, at ease with leaving the comfort zone and to navigate ambiguity
  • Understanding of the end-to-end (re)insurance value chain and relevant market knowledge (e.g. trends, competitors, capital markets context)
  • Entrepreneurial mindset (sense of urgency, cost consciousness and personal risk taking), committed to sustainable performance and continuous improvement
  • organizational/project management skills, ability to manage peak period workloads (seasonality)
  • Ability to work independently as well as to collaborate in a team environment
  • Comfortable to work in a fast-paced environment and to adapt to change
  • Creative thinking capability and a problem-solving mindset
  • Network within Japanese (re)insurance industry is a plus
  • Languages: Mother tongue or fully proficient in Japanese, good English skills
