About the Role

  • In Casualty Treaty underwriting, transactional underwriting and insurance portfolio pricing of Casualty business is carried out in close collaboration with the Client Markets units.  Casualty includes: (1) Liability (General Third-Party Liability, D&O, Professional Indemnity, etc.), (2) Personal Accident, (3) Motor, and (4) Cyber.
  • In the first introduction phase, you mainly will learn and study in an interactive classroom environment:
    • Reinsurance / insurance products in the market – Understand those characteristics and why those exist.
    • Swiss Re's own products and operations– Understand our business model.
    • Analytical, financial and communication skills applicable for your Underwriting role.
  • Then, you will work on underwriting activities through on-the-job training:
    • Analyse risks which we are going to take.
    • Follow some basic processes of underwriting. But you are always encouraged to challenge the status-quo and find innovative ways for operational improvement.
    • Work as a Casualty Underwriter including pricing our products.
  • Regular client visits and training are also part of this role so ability to communicate optimally is crucial.


About the Team


You will join as a Casualty Treaty Underwriter based in our dynamic Tokyo office just after the onboarding training.  The team is responsible is responsible for the management of the Casualty Product line.  This includes analyzing performance drivers and business practices with the goal of modifying and/or forming products that can be distributed through the Japanese Client Markets Team.  The team is part of the P&C (Property & Casualty) Underwriting Hub Asia & ANZ, where over 50 Property and Casualty underwriters work in different locations such as Bangalore, Beijing, Hong Kong, Singapore, Sydney, and Tokyo.


About You

  • Successfully completed university, with a degree in Actuarial Science, Biology, Business Administration, Chemistry, Economics, Engineering, Geography, International Business, Law, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, or related fields
  • Strong interest in/motivation to learn about insurance/reinsurance
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills
  • Approaches problems with curiosity and flexibility, is a fast learner
  • Innovative, showing a high degree of own initiative
  • Team-player, willingness to contribute actively to the overall team spirit
  • Ability and passion to work in a global and multicultural environment.
  • Aptitude to express yourself effectively in one-on-one conversations and small groups
  • Mature & self-confident; able to work with clients, business partners or senior colleagues
  • Capacity to readily adapt to a changing and dynamic environment
  • Demonstrable expertise to work independently and proactively
  • Strong analytical skills and can focus on details without losing track of the bigger picture
  • Excellent oral and written English skills; additional language skills advantageous, in particular Japanese.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills (Must: English / Nice to have: Japanese)
