About the role

As a Natural Catastrophe Modeller you will get the opportunity to learn about and contribute to subject right in the heart of Swiss Re: evaluating and handling of natural perils insurance risks is a cornerstone for our economic success and our strategy to foster societal resilience from climate risk. You'll build hands on experience in advancing Swiss Re's Natural Catastrophe (Nat Cat) modelling platform, the global engine behind all related business outcomes and new insurance products.

With the Cat Perils R&D team, you develop, maintain, deliver and train tools and systems for the entire Swiss Re group. This permits you to build a global perspective on natural perils risk and its economic insurance context. You'll operate in a highly global context of clients and stakeholders.

We are looking for a self driven individual with a high aspiration to bridge science and technology with insurance knowhow, advancing the state-of-the art of insurance risk evaluation and product development, to help us closing the protection gap and add to resilience.   • Ensure high quality first level support for Nat Cat tools
  • Develop and maintain documentation and training material
  • Stay on top of the latest developments in the Cat model development
  • Develop, maintain, improve and distribute Swiss Res catastrophe modelling environment
  • Regular functional and technical benchmark with third party providers and other relevant sources
  • Maintain content and functionality of rating tools in collaboration with the entire Cat Perils unit
  • Perform trainings on usage and cat knowledge



About the team

The catastrophe perils department owns Swiss Res global natural catastrophe risk view. The department advances state of the art probabilistic and proprietary modelling technology for earthquakes, windstorms and flood hazards, with a clear business mandate to grow Swiss Re competitive edge in close cooperation with our underwriters and clients.

We are organized in three regional teams (North America, EMEA and Asia) and a cross-functional R&D team. The R&D team, in which you will be embedded, is coordinating and guiding regional model development activities and takes responsibility for the development and training of the platform.

Your working location will be right in the center of Zurich. The team consists of professionals from a wide range of specializations in natural science, engineering and statistics.

Growing experience will, over time, open doors to other Nat Cat related insurance fields. This will enable you to build up an excellent foundation for a next career step in a role closer to the operational business activities in our global organization.



About You

  • Successfully completed a master's degree or Ph.D. preferably in geophysics, engineering or another natural science discipline or equivalent
  • Bring strong overall computer skills, specifically in programming (Matlab (preferred), Python, R)
  • Have experience with relational/structured databases (SQL/others) and geographic information systems (GIS) is seen as a plus
  • Show strong communication and presentation skills and ability to explain complicated problems with clarity and effectiveness
  • Have excellent oral and written command of English (additional languages a plus)
  • Are proficient in MS Office applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
  • Bring a high-level of curiosity for the financial industry and eagerness to scout for new ideas and transform them into commercial value.
  • Show the ability and enthusiasm to work in a global and multicultural environment, and to be mobile in terms of workplace or location
  • Aptitude to express him-/herself effectively in one-on-one conversations and small groups
  • Are mature & self-confident and looking forward to work with clients, business partners as well as with senior colleagues
  • Are willing to readily adapt in a changing and dynamic environment
