About Swiss Re

The Swiss Re Group is one of the world’s leading providers of reinsurance, insurance and other forms of insurance-based risk transfer, working to make the world more resilient. It anticipates and manages risk – from natural catastrophes to climate change, from ageing populations to cybercrime. The aim of the Swiss Re Group is to enable society to thrive and progress, creating new opportunities and solutions for its clients. Headquartered in Zurich, Switzerland, where it was founded in 1863, the Swiss Re Group operates through a network of around 80 offices globally. It is organised into three Business Units, each with a distinct strategy and set of objectives contributing to the Group’s overall mission.

About the Role

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual looking to kick-start their career in machine intelligence and applied AI, starting as soon as possible and working for 6 months in close collaboration with Swiss Re's machine intelligence experts to tackle difficult challenges in natural language processing. You will contribute significantly towards our efforts in state-of-the-art text segmentation using statistical methods and techniques such as image recognition, attention-based neural networks, word embeddings, and discourse parsing. You will take the initiative to research, develop and implement your own solutions under the guidance of a senior mentor.

About the Team

This internship is co-supervised by the Swiss Re Institute and The Machine Intelligence and Strategy team. We research and build proof-of-concept solutions for internal and external clients, drawing from the latest research as well as using tried-and-tested methods to deliver high quality products that make a difference in the (re)-insurance industry. We work mainly with unstructured data such as text and images. Working in close collaboration with the Digital and Smart Analytics team, we are the centre of excellence within Swiss Re for artificial intelligence, natural language processing, Bayesian inference, and image understanding.

The Swiss Re Institute aims to build on Swiss Re's position as the thought leader in the (re)insurance industry by developing industry-relevant research with internal teams and experts, as well as external partners. The Institute engages with stakeholders by sharing insights, tailored services and products to enable risk-focused decision making and smarter solutions to manage risk.
