About the role


This role is positioned within the Climate Risk Solutions team in Swiss Re Corporate Solutions. As a member, you will join our effort to further develop our Physical Climate Risk Insights used for evaluating the risk levels of portfolios and assets, e.g. how will a location be affected by heatwaves, floods, etc. in the future depending on different RCP/SSP scenarios. This includes handling large sets of climate model and reanalysis data, implementing and interpreting statistical analyses and introducing climate change scenarios into Swiss Re's proprietary probabilistic natural catastrophe assessment models.

 

In your role as a Physical Climate Risk Intern, you will:

 

  • Develop and improve the Climate Risk Insights for evaluating changes in asset exposure (including heat waves, wildfires, flood, sea level rise and other associated perils)
  • Implement and extend statistical analyses using climate models (CMIP6, CORDEX) and reanalysis data (ERA5)
  • Interpret the results and consult product developers on the limitations thereof
  • Support the implementation of the Climate Risk Insights into client-facing, operational tool
  • Prepare marketing and outreach material as well as model documentations for the Climate Risk Tool
  • Explore methodologies to introduce climate change scenarios for tropical cyclones, extra-tropical cyclones and flood events into probabilistic, event-based risk assessment models

 

About you

 

  • Studies in natural sciences or computational science with experience in climate or atmospheric sciences
  • First experience in working with climate models (i.e. CMIP5/6 GCMs, RCMs, etc.), ensemble analysis, uncertainty quantification and extreme event analysis
  • Experience in bias correction/downscaling methods and climate impact assessment is a plus
  • Ability to work with large, multi-dimensional data (e.g. netCDF, GRIB, TIFF files)
  • Strong computing and programming skills (e.g. Matlab, Python)
  • Self-management skills and ability to work as part of an agile team
  • Independent thinking and creative problem-solving skills
  • Highly motivated with an ability to effectively manage own time and priorities in a collaborative environment
  • High-level of curiosity to scout for new ideas
  • Strong communication and presentation skills and ability to explain complex problems with clarity and effectiveness
  • Good verbal and written English
