The programme offers you the chance to join the dynamic, fast-moving world of a leading risk knowledge organisation. Over an 18-month period, you will receive on- and off-the-job training, including a job rotation that gives you the opportunity to work across different lines of business and departments.
In the second half of the programme, we will work with you to jointly develop your individual perspectives for your career at Swiss Re.
About the Role
As our Graduate and future underwriting professional, you will work right in the heart of our business, interacting daily with diverse teams across the company that assist in the underwriting value chain. We strongly believe in learning by doing and therefore you will spend most of your time in the business working with amazing and experienced colleagues. You will have a mentor at your side helping you to navigate through professional situations and exciting challenges.
You will play a critical role in analyzing new Construction / Engineering projects, assessing risks, evaluating insurance applications, and contributing to the profitability of our organization.
Your daily activities include:
- Review and assess risk factors for project applications across a broad range of industries, including (but not limited to) Infrastructure, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Power Generation, Renewable Energy, Industrial Engineering, Biochemical and Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and & Naval or Marine Engineering. You’ll also work with emerging risks, such as semiconductor plants, battery factories, hydrogen power generation, and more
- Analyse risk information, including engineering inspection reports or other technical assessments, coverage information, loss history, financial statements, and market trends, to prepare and propose informed decisions on policy acceptance or rejection
- Calculate appropriate premiums based on risk assessment, natural catastrophe risk, coverage provided, within company guidelines
- Collaborate with brokers, clients, and internal stakeholders to gather additional information and clarify policy details
- Attend client meetings and marketing events with clients and brokers
- Support senior underwriters in complex underwriting tasks
- Active involvement in a cross functional project to gain an end-end understanding of the underwriting value chain incl. portfolio steering

About the Team
During the Graduate Programme, you’ll be part of the Global Engineering Team, with a focus on North America. This team provides key insights and maximizes our impact on client needs across the region, specializing in reinsurance for construction projects, civil infrastructure, industrial power generation, renewable energy, and other complex engineering risks. You’ll also work with emerging risks, such as semiconductor plants, battery factories, hydrogen power generation, and more.
You will join a global team with diverse professional and technical backgrounds in 14 of our offices around the world where 'team spirit' is not just a tagline, but every day's practice. Global Engineering is part of Specialty within P&C Reinsurance, which is the biggest Business Unit of Swiss Re.
About You
We are looking for people who want to make a difference!
- Successfully completed university degree (Bachelor or Master degree), preferably in fields such as Engineering or Risk Management and Insurance
- Strong interest in/motivation to work in Property, Casualty or Specialty Reinsurance
- Willingness to travel
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and high attention to detail
- Strong in communication and high confidence to work with clients, brokers, and senior colleagues
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a positive and collaborative attitude
- Innovative, showing a high degree of own initiative, takes accountability and is a fast learner
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
The base salary for this role is $70,000. Candidates with advanced degrees may be eligible for a higher base compensation. Please note that the compensation details listed reflects the base salary only, and does not include short-and long-term incentives or other benefits offered.
