Application Engineer - Armonk, NY

Are you an early-career engineer excited about building technology that powers global financial systems? At Swiss Re, we don't just write code — we engineer resilience. Join a team where your work directly supports the systems that keep one of the world's leading reinsurers moving, paying, and thriving. If you're curious, collaborative, and ready to grow, this is your launchpad.

About the Role

We are looking for a Junior Application Engineer to join our Treasury InfoTech team in Armonk, NY. This is a fantastic opportunity for an early-career technologist to contribute to enterprise-grade applications that underpin Swiss Re's global treasury and banking connectivity platforms. You'll work alongside experienced engineers and product teams, gaining hands-on exposure to modern engineering practices, cloud technologies, and the fascinating world of financial systems — all while making a real impact from day one.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the design, enhancement, and support of Cash Management applications and services, with a focus on data-driven, SQL-based solutions and core business functionality
  • Develop and maintain database queries, reports, and data analyses to support business operations, incident resolution, and strategic initiatives
  • Collaborate with business stakeholders to understand requirements, translate them into robust technical solutions, and ensure alignment with business needs
  • Support application development and maintenance activities, including Java/Spring-based components where applicable
  • Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code, queries, and technical artifacts in line with engineering best practices
  • Assist in troubleshooting production issues, performing root cause analysis and implementing sustainable, long-term fixes
  • Participate in backlog refinement, testing, and release activities to support continuous delivery and improvement
  • Continuously build technical and domain knowledge in Cash Management processes, data structures, and systems

About the Team

You'll be joining the Cash Management IT team within Treasury InfoTech — the team responsible for the systems that manage Swiss Re's global cash positions. Our platform ensures that funds are always available for trading and operational payments, seamlessly connected with key trading systems such as Aladdin and Apex. We also integrate with our Financial Messaging Hub to send payments and receive bank balances across the globe. We are a global, collaborative, and inclusive team that works closely with business and engineering partners to keep these mission-critical systems running smoothly — and to continuously evolve them. We follow Agile and DevOps practices and are actively transitioning toward a cloud-first architecture on Microsoft Azure, making this an exciting time to join and grow with us.

About You

You are a curious, motivated engineer who thrives in a collaborative environment and is eager to learn. You bring strong analytical thinking, a willingness to ask questions, and a genuine interest in building technology that matters. You communicate clearly, take ownership of your work, and enjoy solving complex problems alongside a diverse, global team.

We are looking for candidates who meet these requirements:

  • Foundational programming skills, with Java preferred or a similar object-oriented language, and a solid understanding of software development principles
  • Working knowledge of SQL and relational databases, including the ability to write and maintain queries and support data-driven solutions
  • Understanding of APIs and data structures, with the ability to apply these concepts in real-world application development and integration scenarios

These are additional nice to haves:

  • Exposure to Java/Spring Boot or microservices architecture
  • Familiarity with version control tools such as Git
  • Exposure to cloud platforms, with Microsoft Azure preferred
  • Understanding of DevOps practices, including CI/CD concepts
  • Interest in financial systems, payments, or treasury platforms
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
  • 0–2 years of experience, including internships, graduate programs, or rotations
  • Strong communication skills in English and the ability to work effectively in a global team environment
