Head Casualty R&D Delivery Americas

About Swiss Re

The Swiss Re Group is one of the world’s leading providers of reinsurance, insurance and other forms of insurance-based risk transfer, working to make the world more resilient. It anticipates and manages risk – from natural catastrophes to climate change, from ageing populations to cybercrime. The aim of the Swiss Re Group is to enable society to thrive and progress, creating new opportunities and solutions for its clients. Headquartered in Zurich, Switzerland, where it was founded in 1863, the Swiss Re Group operates through a network of around 80 offices globally. It is organized into three Business Units, each with a distinct strategy and set of objectives contributing to the Group’s overall mission.

About the role

Swiss Re's Casualty Research and Development department is seeking a new colleague to lead its US sub-team. Together, we seek to improve our understanding of casualty lines of business, to identify future trends and to apply this knowledge to business problems faced by Swiss Re and our clients.  Does the idea of leading a small, diverse team to define, drive and execute Casualty R&D's research and business agenda for the US – world's largest casualty market – and the Americas appeal to you? Do you have experience identifying key business problems? Formulating formal, quantitative approaches to solving them and then to put these solutions in place? Can you come up with intuitive explanations to convince your varying audience of business-relevant insights produced using innovative approached to data analysis and modelling?  Then this position is something for you to consider! Fundamentally, our work is about solving business issues that require strong technical and analytical skills. Significant and hands-on prior experience with a numerical programming language (R is our first preference) as well as applied data analysis is necessary. Whilst there are no formal actuarial background requirements, knowledge of insurance industry and techniques will facilitate understanding of the real issues behind technical details.

About the team

You will be part of the Casualty R&D department within Group Underwriting. We are an international team with presence in three offices around the world and a wide variety of cultural and professional backgrounds. We strive for an increased casualty risk understanding, market transparency and business quality and profitability through our advance research and modelling capabilities. We lead casualty forward-looking strategic initiatives at the Group level and use the gained knowledge and insights at the Business Units and the Clients. Casualty R&D is at the forefront of quantitative casualty modelling and develops, as part of its mandate, the flagship Liability Risk Drivers™ (LRD) – Swiss Re's patented comprehensive forward-looking model – addressing a broad range of topical issues in risk identification, monitoring, assessment, costing and management, as well as business and portfolio steering.

About you

You are passionate about applying your proven quantitative skills to business problems. Working with internal and external partners you identify business problems and solve them relying on our R&D, delivering tangible insights based on proven quantitative analyses.

Quantitative skills: clear emphasis on real-life applications

You are well-versed in applied numerical analyses such as time series, parametric and non-parametric distributions and text processing. Your main interest, however, is not in the methods and models as such, but in their application to real-life problems. You steer team's research into areas with direct business implications, and together with our stakeholders translate results of the work into actionable conclusions.

You bring to the team:

  • Strong academic background in mathematics, statistics / data analysis or computer science, or in another technical field including natural sciences
  • 5+ years of experience in the (re)insurance domain, possibly supported by actuarial studies
  • Hands-on experience in R and ability to carry out own, solid analyses
  • Excellent oral and written English to accompany your strong communication skills
  • Flexibility to accommodate limited travel (approx. 10% of time), both within the US and internationally

Going to the core: finding what truly matters

Together with our external and internal business and technical partners, you find their real objectives with significant business value. Selectively detail oriented, you keep in mind the bigger picture to identify and focus the team's activities on areas that have a major impact on end product and fit Casualty R&D agenda.  You can venture out of your comfort zone to share views, hypothesize and brainstorm a solution, and then to lead the team fully focused on execution. With an open mind to new ideas and techniques, you have an understanding of insurance, actuarial methods, rating plans and "typical" ways to cost casualty business today.

Personal skills: you make it happen

Overall Casualty R&D is a relatively small team, spread across three key locations worldwide. We all rely on our independence and dedication to achieve our goals.

  • You are results driven, eager to see output of your work being utilized and making a difference
  • Accountable and independent, you have curiosity and ability to work closely together with our business colleagues to find core issues and to develop solutions that address them
  • You are comfortable presenting to senior management, both internally to Swiss Re and externally to our clients, altering delivery depending on the audience to clearly convey the main points
  • Organized, able to prioritize and easily switch between projects
  • You always make sure that the ultimate goal is clear to the team and fits Casualty R&D department priorities
  • Proven leadership abilities to inspire and engage, build talent and foster collaboration
  • Passionate to work in an international and diverse environment
