Legal Counsel (Hybrid Work Model)

This role can also be a remote teleworker within the Eastern US time zone if successful candidate is not located at one of the office locations.  Office locations are hybrid office/home weekly work schedules.

In this role you will provide legal advice to a business that focuses on innovation and big data to quickly and easily deliver insurance solutions by using technology to the fullest extent possible, including data analytics, on-line sales, wearable devices and other non-traditional methods across life, health and property casualty insurance.  Our Legal Counsels work closely with the business partners to deliver and implement advisement and strategy and collaborate with key stakeholders and the larger legal team.

Responsibilities and knowledge/experience are likely to include but not limited to:


  • Provide insurance regulatory advice concerning product development, underwriting, administration, and claims
  • Have working knowledge of insurance products and insurance distribution channels including licensing, appointments, advertising, marketing and sales
  • Have the ability to apply insurance regulatory requirements to new and creative insurance benefits or features
  • Have familiarity with federal and state privacy and information security laws (e.g., HIPAA, CCPA, GDPR, NAIC laws, etc.)
  • Close collaboration with colleagues which includes a diverse group of lawyers, marketers, underwriters, actuaries and other cross-functional peers to provide legal support for the iptiQ Americas business
  • Partner with fellow legal specialists, including dispute resolution, compliance, corporate governance, employment and intellectual property experts on legal advisory matters
  • Team with other members of the Swiss Re legal department regarding disputes, corporate organization, employment and intellectual property matters
  • Assist with regulatory issues related to acquisitions, joint ventures and the establishment of new licensed businesses
  • Draft and negotiate distribution, partnership, NDAs, technology, and other insurance-related agreements
  • Craft forms, contracts, and processes to build and ensure a compliant, scalable business that can fulfill its mission and purpose
  • Advise on structuring business relationships, new product development, marketing efforts and other business activities
  • Support internal projects as needed; provide timely and concise input to senior leadership for quarterly legal reports, team KPIs, strategic initiatives, etc.
  • Support development of efficient policies and practices that maintain high legal and ethical standards.
  • Share knowledge to promote consistency and increase the agility of the team.

Is this you?


  • 5-7 years' experience as an attorney in an insurance company or firm with insurance regulatory experience
  • Meaningful insurance regulatory experience supporting business leaders of insurance carriers; transferable skills from having worked for or with other insurance businesses.
  • Demonstrate emotional intelligence, pragmatism, a business enabling mind-set, social skills, curiosity, and resilience
  • Able to work independently while balancing the need to collaborate and maintain an appropriate level of communication and coordination with your peers
  • Ethical, professional and act with integrity
  • Skilled at balancing legal risks and its impacts to the company while serving the needs of the company's customers and partners
  • Willingness to advocate successfully for a given legal position whether it be within the business or while negotiating with outside parties
  • Detail-oriented and dedicated to providing high-quality, timely client service that is balanced with a clear focus on protecting the interests and reputation of the firm
  • Excellent communicator (written and verbal) and adopt a pragmatic, consultative approach to problem-solving
  • Enjoy and thrive in working in a fast-paced environment and have a track record of effectively managing competing demands
  • Team-player, willing to work collaboratively and constructively with others

For New York City/Armonk the estimated base salary range for this position is $128,000 to $211,000.  The specific salary offered for this or any given role will take into account a number of factors including but not limited to job location, scope of role, qualifications, complexity/specialization/scarcity of talent, experience, education, and employer budget.  At Swiss Re, we take a "total compensation approach" when making compensation decisions. This means that we consider all components of compensation in their totality (such as base pay, short-and long-term incentives, and benefits offered), in setting individual compensation.
