About the team

In this position, you will be part of the North American Legal Team.  The team leader, to whom you would report, reports to the Americas Regional General Counsel. 

About the role

We are looking for in house legal counsel to join Swiss Re in Canada and provide holistic legal support to our North American business.  Your work will have a big impact on our operations.

In this role you will be expected to:

  • Advise Swiss Re's Canadian business on Canadian law, with an emphasis on reinsurance and insurance regulations.
  • Obtain regulatory approval for transactions and activities.
  • Work closely and collaboratively with other Swiss Re lawyers and a diverse group of structurers, marketers, underwriters, actuaries and other cross-functional colleagues to provide legal support for Swiss Re's Canadian business.
  • Coordinate on advice to the business with other Swiss Re legal specialists, including reinsurance and insurance attorneys, dispute resolution, compliance, corporate governance, employment and intellectual property experts.
  • Draft and provide legal advice on a variety of agreements.
  • Provide legal advice on structuring business relationships, new product development, marketing efforts and other business activities.
  • Support internal projects as needed; provide timely and concise input to senior management for quarterly legal reports, team KPIs, strategic initiatives, etc.
  • Support development of efficient policies and practices that maintain high legal and ethical standards.
  • Share knowledge to promote consistency and increase the agility of the team. 

About You

  • You are a Canadian qualified lawyer, in good standing, with a minimum of four years' experience with a law firm or (re)insurance company.  Dual U.S. and Canadian legal license is a plus, but not required.
  • You have experience advising on Canadian reinsurance and insurance law and regulation. 
  • You are detail-oriented and dedicated to providing high-quality, timely client service that is balanced with a clear focus on protecting the interests and reputation of the firm.
  • You are an excellent communicator (written and verbal) and adopt a pragmatic, consultative approach to problem-solving.
  • You enjoy working in a fast-paced environment and have a track record of effectively managing competing demands.
  • You are a team-player, willing to work collaboratively and constructively with others.
  • French language skills are a plus, but not required.
  • Some travel may be required, but will be less than 15%.
