Group Life & Disability Business Development Manager


About the role:

The U.S. Group & Medical Reinsurance team is responsible for the origination and development of Group Life, Accident and Long-Term Disability and Medical reinsurance.

In this position you will grow to prospect and originate new business for the full spectrum of Swiss Re's Group Life, Accident and Long-Term Disability products and services.

In addition, you will be trained to be the lead 'messenger' in terms of showcasing how Swiss Re can help prospects / clients to sell more business, create operating efficiencies, and improve the performance of their portfolio(s). 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Building relationships, creating strong networks, and having an impactful presence
  • Strong interest in new business origination
  • Monitor the market(s)/line(s) of business with regards to news/information on clients and competitors, reinsurance, Insurtech updates
  • Anticipating needs of prospects and/or clients and selling/pitching Swiss Re services (inclusive of creating persuasive pitch decks and external presentations)
  • Represent Swiss Re's U.S. Group Reinsurance team at industry meetings and prospect and/or client meetings
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with other US Life & Health departments within Swiss Re
  • Improve industry presence of Swiss Re as an innovative partner through prospect and/or client interactions and other external means such as social media, insurance/reinsurance board member representation, speaking at industry events and/or writing articles for industry publications

Leadership and Teamwork

  • Act as change agent and drive commercial culture, agility, and innovative thinking for business development purposes
  • Motivates Group reinsurance team by fostering open communication and exchange of creative ideas
  • Supports multi-disciplined team(s) across matrix to achieve objectives
  • Provides leadership and support by searching out external best practices and continued professional development
  • Travel to clients and prospects

About You:

  • 7+ years of practice in Group Life, Accident and LTD insurance or reinsurance in either Actuarial, Finance, or Business Origination
  • College Degree
  • Knowledge of the group life and long-term disability insurance industry with a pulse on future trends
  • Interest in originating new business and maintaining client relationships – both direct and brokered
  • Medical insurance or reinsurance experience a plus, but not required
  • Entrepreneurial and strategic thinker focused on delivering results
  • Interest in sales, negotiation, influencing and presentation skills; executive presence
  • Motivational and interpersonal skills and ability to promote teamwork and cooperation across business units and functions to achieve desired results
  • Open minded, trustworthy, and enthusiastic
  • At ease with leaving comfort zone and stretching oneself and performing, at times, under pressure



For Armonk, NY, the estimated base salary range for this position is $143,000 to $256,000.  The specific salary offered for this, or any given role will take into account a number of factors including but not limited to job location, scope of role, qualifications, complexity/specialization/scarcity of talent, experience, education, and employer budget.  At Swiss Re, we take a "total compensation approach" when making compensation decisions. This means that we consider all components of compensation in their totality (such as base pay, short-and long-term incentives, and benefits offered), in setting individual compensation.
