Senior Property Treaty Underwriter, US Globals

We are looking for a Senior Property Treaty Underwriter who will be responsible for underwriting, costing, and strategically developing a portfolio of U.S.-based global property treaty business with our largest clients.

About the Role

 

The role combines technical treaty underwriting expertise, actuarial analysis, portfolio steering, and market-facing leadership, with a strong focus on risk quality, capital efficiency, and long-term profitability across the reinsurance cycle.

 

You will collaborate closely with internal and external stakeholders - including clients, brokers, actuaries, client managers, reserving teams, and senior leadership - to evaluate individual treaties, steer client portfolios, and negotiate price and terms while shaping the market dynamics.

 

Key responsibilities include:

 

  • Underwrite U.S. Global Property Treaty business across catastrophe and non catastrophe structures, including quota share, excess of loss, and aggregate covers, applying sound underwriting judgment and technical analysis.
  • Analyze treaty submissions using exposure data, catastrophe modeling outputs, pricing frameworks, and qualitative risk assessment to ensure alignment with risk appetite and develop robust loss picks. 
  • Assess cedant performance, portfolio composition, underwriting philosophy, and risk controls, and structure treaties (limits, attachments, reinstatements, and T&Cs) to appropriately balance risk and return.
  • Review contract and policy language to ensure compliance with underwriting guidelines and consistency with intended risk transfer.
  • Act as a trusted underwriting partner and visible market representative, fostering strong relationships, disciplined risk selection, and a collaborative, solution‑oriented team culture.
  • Mentor and coach junior underwriters to build necessary skills to support our clients and manage market cycles

The US Globals and Canada Property CUO desk plays a pivotal role in evaluating some of Swiss Re’s most complex and strategically important property treaties, both in terms of underlying exposures and innovative deal structures. Our US Globals clients include some of the largest and most sophisticated carriers worldwide, and our remit spans US commercial and personal lines, as well as international exposures.

 

Bringing diverse and deep expertise to every challenge, our team integrates seasoned underwriters and actuaries who collaborate to deliver highly tailored, data driven solutions for clients. About You

 

You are a seasoned, strategic, and analytically driven professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment. You bring deep intellectual curiosity and the ability to translate complex quantitative insights into actionable recommendations. You demonstrate mature judgment, proactively address challenges, and build strong partnerships across teams and stakeholders.

 

Qualifications and Skills:

 

  • Experience: Minimum 7+ years of experience in a reinsurance or primary underwriting, portfolio management or pricing function (property experience a plus).
  • Expertise: Strong understanding of (re)insurance underwriting, property market dynamics, and key strategic drivers influencing insurer performance.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Communication: Proven ability to distill and communicate complex analyses to executive‑level stakeholders internally and externally.
  • Collaboration: Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships and work collaboratively within multi‑disciplinary teams across geographies.
  • Business Acumen: Strong ability to incorporate market intelligence and forward‑looking views into underwriting and pricing recommendations.
  • Flexibility: Limited travel required mostly across the US, primarily for client engagement.

Our company uses a hybrid work model requiring at least three days in the office each week, with the option to work onsite full-time if preferred.  This position is not eligible for full-time telework or visa sponsorship.

 

 

The estimated base salary range for this position in Schaumburg is $156,000 to $234,000 and in Armonk, NY and New York, NY is $164,000 to $246,000.  The specific salary offered for this or any given role will take into account a number of factors including but not limited to job location, scope of role, qualifications, complexity/specialization/scarcity of talent, experience, education, and employer budget.  At Swiss Re, we take a "total compensation approach" when making compensation decisions. This means that we consider all components of compensation in their totality (such as base pay, short-and long-term incentives, and benefits offered), in setting individual compensation.
