VP, Senior Economist, P&C Research, Swiss Re Institute

Location:         Armonk, NY

Are you an experienced economist who can turn complex P&C market developments into clear insights with practical business impact? As part of Swiss Re Institute, you will help shape the Americas perspective on the issues that matter most to Swiss Re and its clients.

About the Role

Swiss Re Institute (SRI) is Swiss Re’s dedicated research and thought leadership division, with a mandate to originate actionable insights that support profitable risk-taking for Swiss Re and its clients. Its expertise spans macroeconomic and insurance research, forecasting, scenarios and emerging risks. Its globally recognized sigma research series has long served as a leading source of data-driven analysis on insurance economics and global re/insurance market trends.

As SRI strengthens its role in delivering actionable insights, advancing insurance economics and supporting client engagement globally, the team has recently reorganized from regional to business line alignment.  Reporting to the SVP and Head of Global P&C Research, this role combines insurance economics research, P&C market expertise and practical business application. The successful candidate will develop forward-looking insights on P&C market dynamics, emerging risks and structural trends affecting insurers, reinsurers and clients. Just as importantly, you will translate that analysis into clear, pragmatic implications for Swiss Re’s business priorities, client dialogue and strategic decision-making, partnering closely with P&C Re, Corporate Solutions and global SRI colleagues.

Key Responsibilities

  • Help shape and deliver SRI's P&C insurance economics research agenda for the Americas, aligned with Swiss Re's business priorities and external market relevance
  • Develop forward-looking perspectives on global and regional P&C market trends, including exposure trends, claims inflation, loss costs, underwriting cycle and pricing dynamics, protection gaps, catastrophe and climate risk, and reinsurance market developments
  • Identify timely and emerging research topics relevant to P&C Re and CorSo clients, underwriting teams, market unit leaders and senior management
  • Apply rigorous quantitative methods, including statistical and econometric analysis, forecasting, scenario analysis and data visualization to develop clear, evidence-based insights
  • Lead priority research projects from question formulation and data gathering through analysis, publication and presentation, managing scope, timelines and stakeholder alignment with a high degree of independence
  • Translate research findings into business-relevant insights that inform client discussions, underwriting dialogue, business strategy and market positioning through reports, articles, presentations and briefings
  • Represent SRI and Swiss Re in select client, broker, industry, regulatory and conference forums, presenting clear perspectives on P&C market issues and their implications for the industry
  • Partner closely with P&C Re and CorSo underwriting, client markets, market unit and communications teams to enhance the commercial impact and accessibility of research outputs
  • Collaborate across SRI teams including Insurance Market Analysis, the Research Office and the Macro team to ensure integrated and consistent perspectives
  • Contribute forecasts and market intelligence to business planning and strategic decision-making across finance, underwriting and risk management
  • Use modern research practices including AI-enabled research workflows and content activation approaches, to improve the quality, efficiency and reach of SRI insights

About the Team

Originating in 1968, Swiss Re’s dedicated research division became Swiss Re Institute in 2017.  We are responsible for the macro house view, scenario applications, insurance economics and the globally recognized sigma research series. Its insights shape Swiss Re’s point of view, inform internal planning and support external thought leadership.

The P&C economic research team is a global team of eight focused on delivering differentiated research, market insights and thought leadership for Swiss Re’s P&C Re and CorSo businesses. As the only P&C economist based in the Americas, this role has an important regional voice while remaining closely connected to the global research agenda.

About You

We are looking for an analytically rigorous, intellectually curious and commercially minded economist with a strong understanding of P&C insurance and reinsurance markets. You are comfortable working with data and economic models and equally effective turning complex analysis into clear, practical narratives for senior business, underwriting, client and industry audiences.  You bring the self-organization and project discipline to move from question to research plan to business-relevant output, adapting as priorities shift while keeping stakeholders aligned on scope, timeline and deliverables.

Key requirements:

  • Significant experience in economics, insurance market analysis, re/insurance research, applied economic research, data science or a related quantitative field; P&C insurance or reinsurance experience is strongly preferred
  • Advanced university degree in Economics, Finance, Actuarial Science, or a related discipline; a PhD is advantageous but not required
  • Solid technical foundation in statistical analysis, econometric modeling, forecasting and data visualization; experience with Python, R, SQL or comparable analytical tools is helpful
  • Strong understanding of P&C insurance economics, reinsurance market dynamics and the factors shaping risk, pricing, profitability and demand
  • Proven ability to lead research from concept through publication or presentation, balancing analytical quality with practical delivery, stakeholder input and changing business priorities
  • Outstanding analytical and conceptual thinking with the ability to connect macroeconomic, demographic, societal, technological and regulatory developments with insurance market implications
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to brief senior stakeholders, make technical analysis accessible to non-specialist audiences, and clearly articulate the “so what” for business decision-making
  • Strong collaboration and influencing skills with the ability to work effectively across functions, business units, geographies and organizational levels
  • Commercial, pragmatic and results-oriented mindset, with the ability to pose insightful questions, structure the research needed to answer them, and translate findings into practical recommendations for client engagement, underwriting dialogue, strategy, and decision support
  • Interest in AI-enabled research and modern digital methods for developing, testing and activating insights in practical, engaging formats
  • Fluent English required; additional language skills are helpful within Swiss Re's global environment
