Senior Developer Workplace Engineer

As the Senior Developer Workplace Engineer within the Developer Workplace squad, you will be a key enabler in our vision to empower every developer at Swiss Re with a seamless, secure, and high-performance workplace. Your role is central to creating a frictionless environment that fosters innovation, accelerates software delivery, and ensures compliance without sacrificing speed. By integrating automation, self-service solutions, and secure-by-design practices, you will help transform Swiss Re into a leading technology-driven reinsurer.

Operating in a senior leadership capacity, you are expected to demonstrate strong influence and coordination in cross-functional settings—guiding technical initiatives, shaping broader strategic decisions, and mentoring junior colleagues to ensure consistent delivery and continuous improvement. You will partner with endpoint engineers, developer advocates, and IT Security to standardize developer workstations, automate onboarding and environment setup, and deliver self-service tools that allow engineers to provision their own dev/test environments and access the right packages and privileges from day one.


Key Responsibilities

Platform & Infrastructure Engineering

Utilize infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform and containerization technologies (e.g., Docker) to design and manage standardized, self-service developer environments and cloud resources. Integrate and configure essential developer tools (such as Git, Azure DevOps, and JIRA) into cohesive, automated workflows that empower on-demand provisioning and streamline deployment processes.

 

Security Integration & DevSecOps

Implement secure-by-design configurations across all developer workstations and established processes. Collaborate with IT Security to define and enforce guardrails, manage access and privileges, and continuously monitor compliance to ensure a secure yet agile development ecosystem.

 

Developer Enablement & Support

Drive the standardization of developer endpoints by automating technical onboarding and environment setup, and by building self-service solutions that grant developers immediate access to the right tools and packages. Provide advanced technical support through effective troubleshooting and clear, comprehensive documentation to enhance the overall developer experience.

 

Collaboration & Continuous Improvement

Engage closely with cross-functional teams - spanning endpoint engineering, developer advocacy, and IT Security - to integrate platforms and optimize workflows. Serve as a content leader who champions best practices, coordinates complex initiatives, and aligns teams on strategic objectives. Leverage developer feedback and performance metrics to drive iterative enhancements, ensuring that automation, self-service, and security measures evolve in line with industry best practices. 

 

Technical Expertise

  • Software Development Background: Twelve plus years of extensive experience in software development with a strong foundation in computational fundamentals.
  • Programming Proficiency: Expert-level skills in popular programming languages, including Java, JavaScript, Python.
  • IDE Mastery: Thorough knowledge of setting up and using IDEs such as IntelliJ IDEA and VS Code.
  • Containerization: Deep understanding of Docker internals with hands-on experience in creating, deploying, and running containerized applications.
  • Infrastructure as Code: Proficient in managing infrastructure resources using declarative configuration languages like Terraform.
  • CI/CD Tools: Proven experience with configuring and utilizing tools such as Git, Azure DevOps pipelines.
  • Operating Systems: Solid understanding of both Linux and Windows operating systems, with practical experience in system-level troubleshooting.
  • Debugging & Problem-Solving: Demonstrated ability to diagnose, debug, and resolve complex issues, improving system performance and security.
  • Technical Documentation: Skilled in producing clear and effective technical documentation using diagrams, flowcharts, and detailed guides.

Collaboration & Leadership

  • Proven ability to lead and drive initiatives across multiple teams and departments, ensuring alignment of goals and clarity in technical direction.
  • Experience in providing technical support and automation that empower developers to work autonomously and efficiently.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders and explain complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Willingness to mentor junior engineers and foster a culture of continuous learning and knowledge sharing.
  • A proactive, innovative mindset focused on streamlining processes, increasing automation, and driving the ongoing evolution of the developer experience.
  • Ability to translate developer pain points into strategic solutions, advocating for automation, self-service, and efficiency.
  • Experience working in global technology organizations, understanding the needs of a distributed developer workforce.
