Senior Risk Manager L&H China

About the role

The CRO office of Swiss Re Beijing provides oversight over all risk-taking activities for the Reinsurance business in China. This role will focus on the Life & Health (L&H) aspect of the business. While supporting the CRO China, you will also support the Head of L&H Risk Management Asia.

Life & Health Risk Management enables conscious and transparent risk-taking by proactively partnering and constructively challenging stakeholders, leveraging knowledge and experience, while offering an independent, global and long-term perspective to facilitate success across Swiss Re's L&H business.

You are responsible for identifying, analysing, mitigating and monitoring L&H insurance risks issues across all risk factors in China, helping the business not only steer away from risks that could destabilise Swiss Re, but also identify risks worth taking, in existing and new risk pools.

 

In fulfilling these responsibilities, you will:

  • Build, maintain and foster high quality relationships with the local, regional and global L&H business team
  • Collaborate with the regional and global Risk Management team to deliver quality risk advice and transparency
  • Support the implementation of risk standards and risk control framework which are in compliance with the local CBIRC (China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission) regulatory requirements and Group Risk Management standards
  • Identify top risk issues associated with China L&H reinsurance business, assess appropriateness of the internal control environment and develop mitigation action plans
  • Provide advice in transactions on potential risk impact, to ensure that Swiss Re accepts the most appropriate business within defined risk appetite. This will include reviewing new product and transaction proposals in China, with a particular focus on large and structured transactions
  • Monitor and report on risk exposures for China L&H reinsurance business including reinsurance, reserving, financial market, credit, funding and liquidity risks in order to highlight any actions that may be required to stay within the target capitalization and risk tolerance of the business
  • Support assurance activities/reviews to assess the quality of expert judgment of the business (reviews of Terms of trade, participation in Insurance Risk Reviews, reviews of costing and reserving work, internal & external risk reports)
  • Support risk identification (including emerging risks) to facilitate forward looking strategies for future risk opportunities and/or risk mitigations
  • Provide expertise and advice to help business partners balance business strategy with appropriate risk management, by fostering strong relationships with Client Management, Business Management and Products counterparts within the L&H community
  • Support communication with external stakeholders including regulators and industry leaders
  • Promote risk culture and risk awareness within the business
  • Lead or participate in L&H relevant risk deep dives (including operational risk reviews) or projects that contribute towards enhanced understanding and mitigation of specific risks
  • Travel required occasionally, as well as attendance to global meetings that span multiple time zones 

 

About the team

The Risk Management team of Swiss Re Beijing support the CRO Reinsurance Asia and Head of China by providing risk transparency, oversight and control over all risk-taking activities for the Reinsurance business in China, contributing to our sustainable profitable growth.

 

About you

  • Strong understanding of Life & Health reinsurance processes; experience working in multiple business functions and exposure to large and structured transactions are highly desirable
  • Superior analytic and modeling abilities and sound risk management and actuarial techniques
  • Strong experience in direct and/or reinsurance pricing of health business is desirable
  • Pricing/product development experience in China preferred
  • China market experience, health insurance experience an advantage
  • Knowledge and understanding of risks and controls within a reinsurance environment
  • Independent and critical thinking, willing to challenge constructively
  • Agile learner, open to new ways of thinking and new ideas; focused on continuous learning and bringing new information into your work
  • Great teammate, willingness to share knowledge and experience within and across team and other risk management functions
  • Ideally, a qualified actuary with 5 years of post-qualification life (re)insurance industry experience.
  • Strong communicator with great influencing and negotiation skills
  •  Fluency in both English and Mandarin Chinese. The role requires frequent internal communications to the local and regional/global teams and we expect a person with the skill to lead such discussion.
