Head of Pricing and Underwriting - Hybrid Work Model

About the team

The Head of Insurance is a member of the senior management team of iptiQ Americas L&H and the global iptiQ Underwriting function, and is responsible for leading the pricing and underwriting team in America. You will be part of a diverse and highly driven team committed to working with life insurers and distributors to provide life and health insurance to as many consumers as possible.

Your team is responsible for all aspects of the pricing, underwriting and the product development process and collaborates with other areas of iptiQ and across Swiss Re to support the coordination, infrastructure and competences that are key to driving forward this business.

About the role

Reporting to the Regional Market Executive iptiQ Americas, you will be responsible and accountable for the pricing and profitability for all Life and Health products, product strategy and underwriting for iptiQ Americas. The role will also have a dotted reporting line to the iptiQ Chief Underwriting Officer.

You are responsible for ensuring product design, pricing and underwriting of all new products reflect current market conditions, channel and distributor dynamics, regulatory and consumer expectations and risk appetite. You will need to ensure appropriate Underwriting governance is established and effective, and leading efforts to apply existing and new data sources to improve risk, underwriting, pricing and portfolio management.

Your main responsibilities will be to

  • Develop the product, pricing & underwriting strategy for the American market.
  • Develop the Underwriting standards which govern product development, pricing and underwriting for the region and ensuring that this adheres to global frameworks & guidelines.
  • Design the underwriting rule set, manage the underwriting rules engine and handle underwriting referrals.
  • Develop the regional strategy with respect to the collection, storage and analysis of data for pricing, risk selection and underwriting.
  • Design insurance products that meet customer and regulator expectations and requirements.
  • Build and maintain the pricing tools and models used.
  • Set initial and ongoing pricing of all products, including setting of pricing best estimate assumptions.
  • Develop timely and effective monitoring of the underwriting performance of the portfolio and provide critical insights to help proactively steer the portfolio.
  • Lead the development of an effective smart circle between sales, pricing, underwriting, claims, finance and actuarial functions.
  • Conduct timely experience investigations in line with global best practice.
  • Build and lead a team of commercial actuaries, analysts and underwriters that work collaboratively with the other iptiQ functions.
  • Be a leader within the global Underwriting community, improving the quality of product, pricing and underwriting across iptiQ and SwissRe.

About you

Your experience & qualifications

  • Ten or more years' pricing experience in the primary life and health insurance industry.
  • Experience in building and leading a team of actuaries, analysts and underwriters.
  • A background in pricing for straight-through processing underwriting optimization, D2C marketing and distribution channels is highly valued.
  • FSA or equivalent qualification is preferred.
  • Knowledge of, or experience in, predictive analytics with particular exposure to the assessment of model validity and, ideally, some experience in building and deploying models.

For Armonk the estimated base salary range for this position is $188,000 to $338,000.  The specific salary offered for this or any given role will take into account a number of factors including but not limited to job location, scope of role, qualifications, complexity/specialization/scarcity of talent, experience, education, and employer budget.  At Swiss Re, we take a "total compensation approach" when making compensation decisions. This means that we consider all components of compensation in their totality (such as base pay, short-and long-term incentives, and benefits offered), in setting individual compensation.
