Big Data Platform Engineer Intern (50% student role)

About the Role

 

We are looking for an enthusiastic intern to start their career! We provide operational support for users of our big data analytics platform ranging from simple guidance through improvement of data-intensive pipelines to making platform efficient, secure, and reliable. Our team members range from PhD in Mathematics to contributors to known open-source Java libraries and Apache Big Data projects.

 

If you join us, you will be able to participate in a variety of initiatives. You can learn and improve your skills in activities like:

  • Help internal customers use the platform better by providing guidance and handling issues.

  • Optimize and clean up data processing pipelines.

  • Advise users on efficiently ingesting terabytes of data from relational databases or millions of records from Kafka topics.

  • Design and apply internal policies on multiple sections of the data platform, aiming on building further governance and efficiency capabilities.

 

About the Team

We reserve time for studying, getting certificates, attending conferences, and organizing upskilling sessions. Besides client projects, we work on innovation projects to learn new methodologies and gain experience.

 

About You

We understand that nobody is perfect and may not meet 100% of the requirements. However, if you meet some of the criteria below and are genuinely curious about the world of data science, we would be happy to meet you.

Ideally you have the following technical skills and knowledge:

  • You are studying Computer Science, a statistics program, Math or Physics

  • Good knowledge of Python or Java programming language

  • Knowledge of Apache Spark

  • Knowledge of Algorithms

  • Knowledge of database internals

 

If you also have the following experience and interests, it is a huge plus:

  • Background in Software Engineering

  • Experience in distributed computing/ databases

  • Passionate about high-performance-computing, functional programming and constant optimizations

The minimum gross base salary for this role is 10 EUR/ per hour. Our final offer to you will be set up fairly, considering the skills and experience that you bring to the Swiss Re Group.
