Database Engineer - Database as a Service (DBaaS)

About the Role

Join our Database as a Service (DBaaS) team and help build, operate, and improve a core platform used across Swiss Re. We provide secure, stable, and easy-to-use database services with a strong focus on automation and self-service capabilities, supporting both private and public cloud environments.

We are looking for a hands-on Database Engineer who enjoys working with enterprise database platforms and is interested in automation, reliability, and continuous improvement.

You will work as part of an experienced and collaborative engineering team responsible for Oracle and PostgreSQL database platforms. The role combines database engineering, operations, automation, and modernization activities, contributing to reliable and scalable services used across the organization.

Operational on-call coverage is limited (approximately once every two months and decreasing as the team grows) and applies only to high-priority incidents. The team follows a "you build it, you run it" philosophy and continuously strives to automate operational activities wherever possible.

What You Will Do

Database Engineering & Operations

  • Support and improve enterprise Oracle and PostgreSQL database platforms
  • Perform database administration, troubleshooting, and operational activities
  • Contribute to platform reliability, availability, backup, recovery, and disaster recovery capabilities
  • Investigate and resolve performance issues across database environments
  • Participate in production support and incident resolution activities
  • Create and maintain technical documentation and operational procedures

Automation & Platform Improvement

  • Contribute to automation initiatives across database platforms
  • Develop and maintain scripts, tools, and Infrastructure as Code solutions
  • Support modernization efforts across Oracle, PostgreSQL, and cloud-based database services
  • Help improve self-service capabilities used by internal engineering teams
  • Participate in platform improvements focused on reliability, efficiency, and operational excellence

Collaboration & Delivery

  • Work closely with database engineers, application teams, and cloud platform teams
  • Participate in agile ceremonies and backlog refinement activities
  • Share knowledge, ideas, and best practices within the team
  • Contribute to technical discussions and solution design activities
  • Help identify opportunities for continuous improvement
