Lead Java Engineer - DBaaS Platform

About the Role

Join our Database as a Service (DBaaS) team and help evolve a core platform used across Swiss Re. We provide secure, stable, and easy-to-use database services with a strong focus on automation and self-service, supporting both private and public cloud environments.

We are looking for a hands-on Lead Java Engineer who combines strong development skills with the ability to guide technical direction when needed.

This is an individual-contributor technical lead role. You will spend most of your time designing, building, reviewing, and improving code, while taking technical lead on selected features, refactoring efforts, and cross-team initiatives.

What you will do

Engineering & Delivery

- Work with and improve a large existing Java codebase
- Drive incremental refactoring and modernization of legacy components
- Contribute to migration towards Spring Boot-based services
- Design, develop, and maintain services forming the DBaaS platform
- Participate in code reviews and maintain high code quality
- Troubleshoot issues and contribute to production support
- Collaborate with database engineers and other teams

Technical Leadership & Delivery
- Lead implementation of selected features and initiatives
- Drive pragmatic improvements in system design, reliability, and maintainability
- Contribute to architectural decisions with focus on practical solutions
- Support end-to-end delivery — design, implementation, testing, and operation
- Collaborate with product owners and other teams to refine priorities
- Apply agile practices to deliver incremental improvements
- Stay actively involved in implementation to keep decisions grounded in reality

About You

We are looking for a strong engineer who enjoys building and improving systems in a practical, hands-on way.

Minimum Qualifications
- Strong experience with Java and backend development
- Experience building and maintaining RESTful services
- Experience working with large, complex codebases
- Proven ability to perform incremental refactoring and modernization
- Solid understanding of software engineering fundamentals and clean code practices
- Experience with CI/CD, Git, and Docker
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Good communication skills and ability to collaborate across teams
- Professional proficiency in English

Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Spring Boot or modernizing legacy Java applications
- Experience with PostgreSQL and/or Oracle
- Understanding of distributed systems challenges (failures, retries, idempotency)
- Experience with cloud platforms (Azure preferred)
- Familiarity with observability, monitoring, and production troubleshooting
- Experience with asynchronous patterns (messaging, background processing)

For Slovakia the base salary range for this position is between EUR 3,800 and EUR 6,300 per month (for a full-time role). 
The specific salary offered considers:
• the requirements, scope, complexity and responsibilities of the role
• the applicant's own profile including education/qualifications, expertise, specialisation, skills and experience
