Student Application Engineer (Part-Time)

Key Responsibilities

Contribute to real software projects by learning on the job and applying your growing technical knowledge to meaningful engineering challenges

Help develop and improve modern web applications and services built on technologies such as Java, Spring Boot, Angular, and TypeScript

Collaborate with engineers, analysts, and stakeholders across Zurich, Bratislava, and India to solve complex problems in a global team setting

Participate in code reviews and team discussions, gaining exposure to industry best practices and professional engineering workflows

Support the development and adoption of AI-powered solutions, including AI-assisted coding assistants and knowledge discovery tools

Experiment with Generative AI tools and explore how they can improve and accelerate engineering workflows

Help maintain application quality and reliability by supporting testing, monitoring, and continuous improvement efforts

Create and update technical documentation to ensure knowledge is shared and solutions are well understood

About the Team
The GFRM, ESG and Emerging Risk team is part of the Risk Management InfoTech department at Swiss Re — a global leader in reinsurance, insurance, and risk transfer, helping make the world more resilient. We are a dynamic and collaborative team dedicated to delivering innovative technology solutions that support Operational Risk Management (ORM), Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG), and Emerging Risk capabilities across the enterprise.
We build and maintain the platforms that underpin Operational Risk, compliance, and governance capabilities, working at the forefront of data and technology. We partner closely with risk professionals, architects, and business leaders to deliver secure, scalable, and maintainable solutions that enable smarter, faster, and more informed risk decisions on a global scale. Our technology portfolio spans the ESG Risk Framework, the Group Emerging Risk Map, AI-powered ESG capabilities, advanced analytics, and data products — all designed to enable efficient sustainability and emerging risk assessment, and to provide actionable insights that support informed decision-making across the organization.
About You

We are looking for candidates who meet these requirements:

Currently enrolled in a degree program in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field

Basic programming knowledge in at least one modern language (e.g., Java, Python, TypeScript, or similar) with a genuine interest in expanding your technical skill set

Familiarity with software development concepts such as version control (e.g., Git), basic application architecture, or web development fundamentals
These are additional nice to haves:

Exposure to or interest in cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure

Awareness of API design and microservices concepts

Interest in Generative AI and AI-assisted development tools

Experience with Angular, Spring Boot, or reactive programming frameworks

Familiarity with data platforms such as Palantir Foundry

Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in an international, multicultural team

A proactive, self-starter attitude with the ability to manage your own learning and workload

Enthusiasm for knowledge sharing and contributing to team discussions and documentation
The minimum gross base salary for this role is 10 EUR/ per hour. Our final offer to you will be set up fairly, considering the skills and experience that you bring to the Swiss Re Group.
