Data Analytics & Operations Intern (12 months internship)

About the Role
As part of the Life & Health (L&H) Client Markets team, you’ll support work related to pricing employee and retirement fund group life insurance benefits, while learning from experienced colleagues. This internship offers the opportunity to build your understanding of how data is transformed into actionable insights. You’ll work alongside the team, contributing to tasks under guidance while gaining practical experience in a collaborative reinsurance environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Support data review, cleaning, and validation to help maintain accuracy.
- Assist with Excel, AI models/code to support group life insurance pricing activities.
- Help gather inputs from internal teams to support assumption validation and approval processes.
- Support client-related activities, including data collection, query responses, and relationship management tasks.
- Work alongside specialists to support client-focused solutions and learn how client needs are addressed.
- Provide coordination and administrative support for planning, scheduling, events, training, research, surveys, and team operations.
About the Team
The Client Markets team is at the heart of Swiss Re's engagement with its reinsurance clients in South Africa. The team is responsible for delivering Swiss Re's reinsurance solutions, setting client strategy, and ensuring seamless communication across cross-functional account teams to bring that strategy to life. As an intern, you'll work directly alongside Client Managers who lead new business sales and pricing, while also collaborating with colleagues across actuarial, underwriting, claims, accounting, and finance — giving you a truly holistic view of the reinsurance business.

Required Skills and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related quantitative field
- Strong proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite, especially Excel, including data manipulation and modelling functions
- Ability to read, interpret, and analyse data, using analytical thinking to draw meaningful conclusions
- Fluent written and spoken English
- Recent graduate or candidate with 6 – 12 months of relevant work experience
Additional Nice-to-Haves
- Experience developing AI agents and tools
- Exposure to insurance, actuarial, or financial services environments
- Strong presentation skills, with the ability to explain complex data insights clearly to non-technical audiences
- Customer-focused mindset and interest in understanding client needs and contributing to practical solutions
This role is offered on the basis of an 12-month temporary contract, with an expected start date on 1st of September 2026. The gross monthly salary for this role is 9 000 ZAR full time.
Our interns have a hybrid work model where the expectation is that they will be in the office at least four days per week.
Preference will be given to Employment Equity candidates.
