About the Role
This is a compelling opportunity for a qualified Fellow (or experienced Associate) of the Society of Actuaries to join Swiss Re's In-Force Management (IFM) team and play a central role in actively managing and optimizing the Americas Life & Health in force block, with a primary focus on the US portfolio.
In Force Management's mission is clear: defend and enhance the value of Swiss Re's Life & Health in force business. In support of this mission, you will develop actionable portfolio insights, design and execute value-accretive in force actions, and manage ongoing in force maintenance requests with discipline and responsiveness. In force actions create value through CSM generation, derisking underperforming business, and delivering capital and capacity relief.
This role offers rich technical development, deeper understanding of reinsurance treaty terms, meaningful client interactions, and the opportunity to sharpen your project management, negotiation, and communication skills.
Key Responsibilities
In Force Portfolio Understanding
- Proactively identify and assess potential in force opportunities using a variety of tools, including the Portfolio Health Database and the Stargate big-data platform
- Advance the use of dashboard analytics, actuarial modeling, and AI tools to enhance portfolio understanding, and recommend and prioritize actions
- Partner with the US Market Unit on WISER responsibilities by monitoring treaty-level loss ratios and emerging performance trends
- Develop in force portfolio communication materials for clients and internal stakeholders to deepen understanding of the portfolio and any recommended actions
In Force Costing Capabilities
- Build and apply in force costing capabilities through live transaction experience
- Conduct calibrations using seriatim experience studies to calibrate deal-level actuarial assumptions for rate reviews and recaptures
- Leverage Valuation AXIS models, perform model reviews, and conduct model validation exercises
- Structure commercially sound and innovative in force actions
- Support internal and external negotiations, presentations, and decision-making forums
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Collaborate with subject matter experts across a range of in force topics, including Client Markets, Products, Contracts, Valuation, Finance, Legal, Reinsurance Admin, Risk Management, and the broader In Force Optimization team
- Clearly communicate in force strategy, prioritization, and trade-offs to diverse audiences
- Advance the deal pipeline with cross-functional teams from origination through treaty execution
Client Requests and Engagements
- Prioritize and address internal and client in force requests for non-contractual treaty changes and exceptions
- Evaluate and respond to client-initiated contractual recaptures
- Understand ceding client perspectives and help identify reasonable alternative solutions when necessary
About the Team
The L&H In Force Management team sits within Swiss Re's broader L&H In Force Optimization global team — a collaborative, high-impact group that partners closely with Market Units worldwide to identify opportunities and execute actions that strengthen the performance, resilience, and growth of the global L&H in force portfolio.
The In Force Management team holds specific accountability for the US and Canada portfolios, driving performance improvement through treaty-level actions and negotiations. The team works hand-in-hand with the US and Canada Market Units to enhance portfolio quality while preserving and strengthening valued client relationships. You'll be joining a team that combines deep technical expertise with a strong commercial mindset and a genuine commitment to collaboration.
About You
You are a commercially minded actuarial professional with Life & Health (re)insurance expertise, strong analytical capacity, and the communication skills to translate complex portfolio insights into clear, compelling narratives for both technical and non-technical audiences. You have a genuine desire to turn data into action — driving financial outcomes that matter for Swiss Re and its clients.
You bring a strategic mindset balanced with attention to detail, and you thrive in cross-functional environments where collaboration, clear communication, and accountability are essential. You are comfortable managing multiple priorities, navigating ambiguity, and delivering results on time-sensitive projects. You approach challenges with intellectual curiosity, a structured problem-solving mindset, and a commitment to transparency with senior stakeholders.
We are looking for candidates who meet these requirements:
- 5+ years of experience in life insurance or reinsurance, with direct exposure to in force management, pricing, or portfolio optimization
- FSA designation, experienced qualified ASA, or equivalent actuarial designation
- Actuarial modeling proficiency, including experience with financial analysis, performance monitoring frameworks, and familiarity with GGY AXIS modeling software
- Strong understanding of IFRS-17 accounting framework as applied to L&H business
- University degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, or a related field
These are additional nice to haves:
- Experience working with big-data platforms (e.g., Stargate or similar) and advanced analytics or AI tools
- Familiarity with reinsurance treaty structures and in force transaction mechanics, including recaptures and rate reviews
- Experience conducting seriatim experience studies and calibrating deal-level actuarial assumptions
- Demonstrated ability to develop and present recommendations to senior leadership and external clients with clarity and confidence
- Proven track record of cross-functional collaboration in complex, matrixed organizational environments
- Experience with client-facing negotiations or commercial structuring of in force actions
Our company has a hybrid work model where the expectation is that you will be in the office three days per week, every week. In addition, this role does not offer relocation or any type of visa/visa transfer support.
The estimated base salary range for this position in Fort Wayne, IN; Chicago, IL or Kansas City, MO is $146,000 to $244,000, and the range for Armonk, NY is $156,000 to $256,000. The specific salary offered for this, or any given role will take into account a number of factors including but not limited to job location, scope of role, qualifications, complexity/specialization/scarcity of talent, experience, education, and employer budget.
