Senior R&D Actuary

 

We are searching for an actuary with life insurance experience in L&H product development, pricing and experience analysis. This role specializes in experience monitoring/analysis and assumption development support for both the US and Canadian market units. Leads and ensures consistent application of sound actuarial principles, methods and tools. We are open to various remote/hybrid/office location options for the right candidate!

 

About the Role

  • Building and maintaining capabilities to continuously monitor population and insured life (direct + reinsurance) experience and understanding the implications on new business steering and portfolio management
  • Support development of key assumptions (most notably mortality and lapse) to be used in costing new business opportunities, evaluating in-force management opportunities, and reserving and valuing in-force business.  This involves analyzing experience study data, interpreting results, assessing risks, and forming recommendations that require sign-off
  • Achieve in-depth understanding of drivers of mortality and lapse including factors centered around policyholder behavior, product characteristics, underwriting and distribution methods, and impacts from differences in target market
  • Develop and adapt tools and analytics to improve methods to monitor and update accurate assumptions
  • Monitor population and insurance publications and research that may help to further improve our methods and assumptions used
  • Maintain current knowledge of existing and prospective clients, business practices, industry trends and regulatory conditions
  • Work with appropriate cross-functional teams to obtain necessary approvals and implement assumptions including functions within the US and Canadian market units, Risk Management, In-force Optimization, and Portfolio Steering & Monitoring 
  • Present findings both internally to colleagues as a way to educate and externally to clients through consulting to support Swiss Re's efforts to differentiate compared to our competitors.  This may include presenting at special client events and industry meetings as appropriate
  • Create and maintain detailed documentation that supports developed assumptions that complies with corporate governance standards
  • Ensure that assumptions developed align with their final intended use in models so unexpected errors are not made

 

About You

  • Strong knowledge of actuarial concepts and principles, such as that obtained by being a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and by having 7+ years of related experience
  • Minimum four year degree in mathematics, statistics, actuarial science or related field with proven mathematical skills and analytical ability – an enhanced understanding of statistical methods is preferred
  • Commitment to understand and use the latest analytical techniques (e.g. GLM, machine learning, AI, etc.) as needed
  • Ability to review analytical results, derive recommendations and communicate implications to all stakeholders
  • Ability to communicate effectively, clearly and transparently to a variety of audiences
  • Understands actuarial models, business processes, and can evaluate accuracy and uncertainty in models
  • Makes sound business decisions, taking into account various points of view, benefits, disadvantages, timing, and availability of resources, even when based on limited data and uncertainty
  • Understands drivers of the industry and business environment
  • Ability to balance differing viewpoints and make decisions factoring multi-disciplinary impact
  • Challenges assumptions, methods and conclusions
  • Strong technical skills; software experience may include excel, visual basic, ICE, R, Python, Stargate, SAS, AXIS
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including a demonstrated ability to work in a team environment and the ability to influence others.  Must be able to develop working relationships with other departments and clients
  • Creative mindset; resourceful in overcoming barriers, adopting a consultative approach as necessary
  • Ability to successfully manage conflicts
  • Open minded, trustworthy and enthusiastic
