If so, this is your opportunity to join one of the world's leading reinsurers and play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Life & Health risk management on a global stage.
About the Role
As a Senior Risk Manager within Swiss Re's Life & Health Risk Management team, you will be at the heart of some of the most complex and commercially significant decisions in the reinsurance industry. This is a role where your expertise genuinely matters — you'll provide independent risk oversight, challenge assumptions constructively, and help ensure Swiss Re continues to honor its long-term promises to clients and society. With both an Americas and global focus, you'll collaborate with colleagues across regions, bringing your knowledge to bear on transactions, portfolio strategies, and risk frameworks that have real-world impact.
Key Responsibilities
- Support business steering and monitoring by providing an independent, expert voice that helps business partners balance commercial strategy with sound risk management principles
- Assess portfolio strategies and business plans for risk accumulation, utilization of risk limits, risk trends and mitigants, and operational and monitoring effectiveness
- Represent Risk Management in Smart Circles and provide risk input to the L&H Re CRO on Market Unit business reviews
- Review inbound transactions, in-force optimization activities, external retrocessions, hedging solutions, and core innovation proposals (including distribution partnerships, product development, and sustainability initiatives) to support Risk Management's sign-off
- Provide expert opinion to ensure risk capital is set appropriately, key risks are identified, reflected, and mitigated, and that contractual terms safeguard prudent risk taking
- Lead and support costing assurance activities through participation in Insurance Risk Reviews and Terms of Trade Reviews
- Contribute to a comprehensive risk management framework, including proposing appropriate limits and ensuring transparent reporting of the risk landscape to a variety of stakeholders
- Support infrastructure and methodology improvements, including internal model vetting, risk capital and Risk Adjustment factor reviews, and governance of origination activities
- Investigate key risk issues and topics relevant to L&H business, such as extreme risk analysis, pandemic risk and monitoring, and L&H accumulations
- Foster strong relationships with stakeholders across the Market Unit, global L&H functions, and other risk management, legal, and compliance teams
About the Team
Swiss Re's Risk Management function is uniquely positioned to help make Swiss Re itself more resilient — enriching risk taking by drawing on accumulated risk knowledge, perspective, and experience. In a world defined by turbulence and uncertainty, Risk Management helps identify risks worth taking and steers the business away from those that could destabilize it. The team delivers accurate valuations, ensures appropriate reserves, and provides in-depth views on business performance — all in service of Swiss Re's long-term profitability and its promise to clients.
Within this broader function, the Life & Health Risk Management team operates with a bold vision: "Boldly tackle tomorrow's challenges today." Whether performing due diligence on a material transaction or preparing a report for a Senior Management Committee, the team brings this vision to life every day. Working globally, team members leverage each other's strengths, learn from one another, and champion conscious, transparent risk-taking. The team partners proactively and challenges constructively — working closely with the first line to help avoid surprises, support commercial best practices, and promote a culture of risk awareness that enables Swiss Re to challenge risk from every angle.
About You
You are a confident, curious, and commercially minded risk professional who brings both technical depth and the interpersonal savvy to influence across a complex, global organization. You are comfortable navigating ambiguity, working across multiple functions simultaneously, and making sound judgements with minimal supervision. You bring a collaborative spirit and a genuine commitment to fostering a risk-aware culture.
We are looking for candidates who meet these requirements:
- Actuarial qualifications (FSA, FCIA, FIA, FFA, or a recognized equivalent) demonstrating a strong technical foundation in Life & Health
- 5–8 years of experience in an Actuarial or Risk Management function, with demonstrated exposure to L&H reinsurance or insurance products and services
- Extensive technical and commercial knowledge of L&H business, including a solid understanding of key products, services, and market dynamics across Swiss Re and its competitors
- Undergraduate university degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Finance, or a related discipline
These are additional nice to haves:
- Experience in transaction review and due diligence, including assessment of retrocessions, hedging solutions, or product innovation proposals
- Familiarity with internal models, risk capital frameworks, and Risk Adjustment methodologies
- Track record of managing multiple stakeholders across different functions, geographies, and seniority levels
- Demonstrated ability to communicate complex risk topics clearly and persuasively — both in writing and verbally — to technical and non-technical audiences
- Experience with extreme risk analysis, pandemic risk monitoring, or accumulation risk in a Life & Health context
- Proven ability to work under pressure and prioritize effectively across competing demands
- A collaborative, growth-oriented mindset with experience mentoring or supporting less experienced colleagues
