Application Engineer III
Application Engineer III
Ready to engineer the future of reinsurance? Let's build it together.
At Swiss Re, we don't just write code — we build solutions that help the world become more resilient. As an Application Engineer III based in Hyderabad, India, you'll be at the heart of a global technology team, crafting high-quality applications and services that power one of the world's leading reinsurance businesses. If you thrive at the intersection of cutting-edge technology and meaningful business impact, this is your opportunity.
About the Role
This is a hands-on, high-impact engineering role where design thinking meets cloud-native development. You'll bring together software engineering expertise, DevOps know-how, and a sharp understanding of business domains to design, build, and roll out applications and APIs that matter. Working in an agile environment, you'll collaborate with global teams and outsourcing partners across all phases of the software development lifecycle — from concept to production.
Key Responsibilities
-
Design and deliver high-quality applications, components, and APIs with a focus on performance, scalability, and maintainability
-
Drive the cloud journey by acquiring and maintaining deep knowledge of our application landscape, software architectures, and cloud-native patterns
-
Shape application architecture in collaboration with cloud solution architects across all lines of business — designing systems that are robust, extensible, and future-ready
-
Leverage modern cloud environments by identifying and exploiting the advantages of platforms such as Azure, Swisscom, or Ali Cloud
-
Stay ahead of the curve by tracking technology trends and evaluating promising solutions that align with business and technical requirements
-
Communicate and champion ideas — present architectural concepts and engineering solutions to wider teams with clarity, compelling storytelling, and well-reasoned arguments
-
Prototype and validate new technologies and approaches, then share insights and learnings across teams to foster a culture of continuous improvement
-
Contribute to technical research and feasibility studies for proposed tooling, software upgrades, and architectural decisions
-
Collaborate across borders — partner effectively with global teams and outsourcing partners throughout all phases of delivery
About the Team
We are the global Reinsurance Technology team — a passionate group of technologists responsible for the technical architecture and engineering of IT shared services and components for Swiss Re's Reinsurance business unit. Our team members bring a rare combination of deep technical expertise and genuine curiosity about the reinsurance business. We believe great technology is built through collaboration, and we work closely with application teams and colleagues across the globe to share knowledge, challenge assumptions, and engineer solutions that make a real difference.
About You
You are a curious, driven, and collaborative technologist who loves solving complex problems with elegant solutions. You bring strong engineering fundamentals and a cloud-native mindset, and you're equally comfortable diving into the details as you are thinking at an architectural level. You communicate ideas with confidence, embrace agile ways of working, and bring creative thinking to every challenge. Whether you're mentoring peers, prototyping a new solution, or presenting to stakeholders, you make an impact.
We Are Looking for Candidates Who Meet These Requirements:
-
10+ years of experience in software engineering with strong fundamentals in design patterns, data structures, and software architecture
-
Full-stack development proficiency with hands-on experience in Java, Spring Boot, and JavaScript/TypeScript with Angular or React frameworks (minimum 3 years in Angular or React)
-
Cloud platform expertise in Azure with a solid understanding of cloud-native architectures and software patterns
-
REST API design and implementation skills, including proficiency with OpenAPI, Swagger, and microservices architecture
-
DevOps and SDLC proficiency across a modern DevOps platform — Azure DevOps preferred, with Jenkins, GitLab, or equivalent experience also welcomed
-
Knowledge of modern AuthN/AuthZ practices and standards, particularly OAuth and OpenID Connect
-
Experience with security-by-design principles and their application in cloud environments
-
Strong analytical and structured problem-solving skills — able to operate at both abstract and detailed levels, ensuring solutions are pragmatic and realistic
-
Ability to evaluate and communicate technology choices through prototyping, feasibility studies, and clear documentation
These Are Additional Nice to Haves:
-
An understanding of insurance or reinsurance business concepts — a genuine plus that will help you connect technology decisions to business outcomes
-
Experience working with globally distributed teams and outsourcing partners across different time zones and cultures
