Compliance Officer
About the Role
We are looking for a highly motivated and dedicated individual to lead compliance activities in support of the Swiss Re Corporate Solutions business in South Africa to ensure compliance with the applicable rules and regulations. You will also have the opportunity to engage in broader Compliance initiatives.
Specifically, you will:
- Monitor, assess and support implementation of regulatory developments relating to Compliance Risks.
- Support the development of local Compliance Risk Frameworks, in coordination with Global Compliance as necessary, including drafting local standards and processes, training and communication for new and changes to regulations.
- Provide enabling guidance and communication to the business with respect to Compliance requirements and implementation of the Compliance Programme, including Global Compliance topics, with a particular focus on South African requirements.
- Provide compliance advice on products, initiatives, transactions, and business processes.
- Perform Compliance Risk Assessments on the legal entity and business specific topics.
- Deliver regular training and communications on relevant Compliance Risks to employees, and management.
- Provide assurance to management regarding the business' implementation of Compliance Risk Frameworks through oversight of business activities and support of assurance activities.
- Deliver regular and relevant reporting to management and the Board of Directors
- Contribute to the preparation and submission of regulatory reports and filings.
- Ensure FAIS registers are monitored and maintained, fit and proper requirements tracked.
- Serve as point of contact for regulators, in coordination with Governmental Affairs and Legal as required. Actively participate during regulatory inspections and exams, managing and responding to regulatory inquiries and requests.
- Support Global Compliance initiatives by providing input and coordinate with the global team.
- Build and manage critical stakeholder relationships with regulators and business and understand the short-term insurance regulator/s needs as the local businesses primary point of contact.
- Build strong relationships with business, Legal, Risk, and Audit stakeholders to promote a robust compliance culture
About the Team
You will report into the Head of Compliance CorSo EMEA and work closely with the CEO of South Africa. The team is business facing with an international footprint and diversity of team members. We provide end-to-end expertise on key Compliance Risks including Anti-Money Laundering, International Trade Sanctions, Anti-Bribery & Corruption, Data Protection, Conduct Risk, Conflict of Interest, Inside Trading and others relating to Swiss Re's Corporate Solutions business. About You
- University degree in law or relevant field
- Minimum 5 years of compliance, legal or risk management experience, preferably in an insurance company or financial services
- Strong knowledge of South African regulatory requirements, including FAIS, Insurance Act, Prudential Regulations, FSRA, POPIA, TCF, and Market Conduct frameworks. Knowledge of compliance requirements in EMEA, with compliance technology, data analytics, or emerging AI-related compliance risks or topics such as AML, Anti-Bribery & Corruption, International Trade Sanctions or Data Protection is a plus
- Must adhere to the Fitness and Propriety requirements for Compliance Officers in terms of the FAIS Act and the Key Persons requirements as set out in Prudential Standard GOI 4 of the Insurance Act
- Completed Regulatory Examination for Key Individuals (RE1)
- Proven ability to provide risk-based compliance advice and translate regulatory requirements into practical business guidance
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication, interpersonal and presentation skills in English

Compensation & Work Model
For South Africa, the base salary range for this position is between R980,000 and R1,630,000 for a full-time role.

- The requirements, scope, complexity and responsibilities of the role
- The applicant's own profile including education/qualifications, expertise, specialisation, skills and experience
In addition to your base salary, Swiss Re offers an attractive performance-based variable compensation component, designed to recognise your achievements.
Furthermore, you will enjoy a variety of global and location specific benefits. Eligibility may vary depending on the terms of Swiss Re policies and your employment contract.
Our company has a hybrid work model where the expectation is that you will be in the office at least three days per week.
