About the Role
In this role, you will lead the legal team that provides advice to the business and functional teams responsible for the US & Canada reinsurance business, assist in translating governance and regulatory requirements into legal processes, and determine legal advisory resource allocation to support core business, projects, and strategic initiatives. You will be responsible for attracting and developing talent on the team and for creating an environment where the team is motivated to deliver outstanding performance. You will also serve as the Legal advisor to the US P&C and L&H leadership teams and as a member of Legal Entity Management for Swiss Re's main US P&C and L&H reinsurance carriers.
Additional key responsibilities include:
- Overseeing the provision of timely, high quality legal advice that balances business opportunities against legal, regulatory, and reputational risks
- Working in close partnership with other Legal & Compliance teams that support the US and Canada reinsurance business, including transactions, dispute and governance teams to achieve desired outcomes and business objectives
- Collaborating effectively with other functional teams that support the reinsurance business, including Risk Management, Finance, and the Contracts & Wordings teams
- Contributing to reporting and assessment of key legal risks and emerging legal and regulatory requirements at the Group, legal entity Board, and management level
- Supporting individualized growth and development opportunities for team members and ensuring training and knowledge sharing opportunities within the team
About the Team
You will be leading a team of 8 seasoned professionals that has a dual mandate of enabling growth of the business while acting to ensure appropriate identification of legal, regulatory, and reputational risks. The team handles a variety of matters, including regulatory filings, advising on core and new business opportunities, and supporting legal needs on strategic growth initiatives and internal projects. The team is client focused, responsive, collaborative, and pragmatic, and expects the same from their leader. The team consists of members located in major Swiss Re office locations and markets, including Armonk, Kansas City, Toronto, and Schaumburg.
About You
We are looking for an exceptional leader, skilled at mentoring and developing talent, who possesses deep technical skills, a proven record of delivery, demonstrated client focus, and the ability to forge connections and positively collaborate with stakeholders across all organizational levels. You must demonstrate accountability and integrity and be able to think quickly and act with urgency, often in emerging situations with incomplete facts or information. You will interact with senior executives across the organization and need to be able to communicate complex concepts in a clear, digestible way.
Essential requirements:
- Admitted to practice in the US or qualified to provide US privileged legal advice, with 10 or more years of (re)insurance experience
- Excellent communication, intercultural, presentation and project management skills
- Deep knowledge of legal and regulatory issues and external developments relevant to P&C and L&H reinsurance business
- Proven record of talent development and motivating high levels of team performance
- Strong analytical skills and a commitment to providing high-quality client service while protecting the interests and reputation of Swiss Re
- Demonstrated capacity to leverage innovative digital technologies and data insights
Occasional international and domestic travel (under 10%) could be required.
For Armonk, NY the estimated base salary range for this position is $192,000 to $300,000. The specific salary offered for this or any given role will take into account a number of factors including but not limited to job location, qualifications, complexity/specialization/scarcity of talent, experience, education, and employer budget. At Swiss Re, we take a "total compensation approach" when making compensation decisions. This means that we consider all components of compensation in their totality (such as base pay, short-and long-term incentives, and benefits offered), in setting individual compensation.
