Interns@Swissre - L&H Claims Intern

About Swiss Re

The Swiss Re Group is one of the world’s leading providers of reinsurance, insurance and other forms of insurance-based risk transfer, working to make the world more resilient. It anticipates and manages risk – from natural catastrophes to climate change, from ageing populations to cybercrime. The aim of the Swiss Re Group is to enable society to thrive and progress, creating new opportunities and solutions for its clients. Headquartered in Zurich, Switzerland, where it was founded in 1863, the Swiss Re Group operates through a network of around 80 offices globally. It is organised into three Business Units, each with a distinct strategy and set of objectives contributing to the Group’s overall mission.

To support the strategic goals of the UK&I claims department and Swiss Re by assisting with key department projects for 2020:

  • Key project: continuing the data collection and analysis as part of an ongoing research project looking at psychosocial factors as predictors of return to work;
  • Additional projects, as time allows: data synthesis for Underwriting & Claims Watch 2020 (claims benchmarking survey); and producing communications/marketing materials around the focus topics of mental health, cancer, and lifestyle factors that influence morbidity.

Rehabilitation is receiving growing attention at not only an insurance industry level, but also from government as we see a move away from state funding of benefits, and ongoing welfare reform. The L&H industry has a role to play here due to the proactive work we do focused on facilitating the recovery and return to work of people who are off work due to illness and injury (through funding physical and psychological treatment, vocational rehabilitation, and other rehabilitative services for income protection claimants).

Our ongoing broad aim as a small healthcare professional team within the insurance sector, is to prove the case for implementing rehabilitation initiatives across income protection policies, by demonstrating the benefits of these initiatives in achieving higher claimant return to work rates, improving the customer experience, and being a cost-effective income protection claims management tool.

The intern will provide valuable assistance to the claims clinical team, by supporting our collection and data analysis that has been ongoing since 2011. This key third replication stage of the project involves collecting and analysing (alongside a data science colleague) the return to work outcomes of a 100+ cohort of income protection claimants who have been assessed using our in-house developed "psychosocial return to work predictive tool", and adding this data into the existing 1,000+ data set in order to recalibrate the predictive model.

  • Assist the Project Lead in analysing the efficacy and statistical strength of the predictive model through research stage three data input, followed by the use of basic statistical analysis, and collaboration with other Swiss Re colleagues including statistician expert and (psychiatrist) Medical Consultant.
  • Support the Project Lead in identifying trends in the data which indicate strength/weaknesses in the model, and explore the implications for further deployment to clients.
  • Support the Project Lead in documenting the outcomes of this further phase in the study, including overall key messages for later sharing both internally and at an industry level (eg for presentation at industry conferences and/or for journal submission).
  • Support wider claims team colleagues with other key projects as time allows, including synthesising client data received as part of Swiss Re's annual industry-wide UK&I L&H claims benchmarking survey (Underwriting & Claims Watch).
  • With guidance from the Supervisor and the Project Lead, manage and organise own work effectively, to ensure that the agreed priorities and deadlines are achieved.
  • Undertake required training as identified by the Supervisor and the Project Lead.

  • Experience maintaining accurate records.
  • Proficiency using Excel at a basic/intermediate level is required.
  • Familiarity with Powerpoint would be advantageous.
  • Accurate and numerate. Able to demonstrate attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with basic statistical principles would be advantageous.
  • Interest in data analysis and ability to identify trends in data.
  • Basic understanding of common health conditions which result in sickness absence would be advantageous (but is not required).

  • Good communication skills.
  • Solution orientation.
  • Team player who can collaborate and maintain working relationships with team members, and other internal stakeholders.
  • Willingness to learn about the role of claims and specifically the claims clinical team, in the re/insurance process for income protection policies.
  • Comfortable learning new systems and processes.

Interns@SwissRe is 10 weeks summer placement from end of June until August 2020.
