We are seeking a highly motivated and results-oriented underwriter to join our underwriting team in London.


Your main area of responsibility will be underwriting profitable property treaty business. In addition, you will be responsible for advancing our solutions strategy in the UK and Ireland market unit.


About the role

  • You evaluate risks in accordance with the company's guidelines and make underwriting decisions within your authority level for assigned treaties.
  • You maintain a balanced portfolio which we intend to grow further with your contribution.
  • You play a meaningful role in meetings and negotiations with clients/brokers, and you build relationships with your clients' property underwriters and organize exchanges to develop business together and to transfer knowledge.
  • You will be a member of the Property Hub EMEA whose strategy is to strengthen transactions, professionalize solutions and sharpen our core. This is a great opportunity for you to contribute to the execution of this strategy by focusing mainly on our solutions proposition.
  • You will take responsibility for the solution development process from ideation, through prototyping to launching, commercialization, scaling, and post binding activities.
  • You will be part of and/or lead a deal team of insurance and reinsurance specialists across functions to execute projects.
  • You coordinate with all necessary partners, including legal and compliance departments, to ensure new solutions meet our standards as well as regulatory requirements.
  • You customise available solutions according to the demands of our clients and end-consumers.


About the Team 

Who are we? Our desk is spread over three locations in London, Zurich, and Munich forming an exciting international underwriting team. You will join a collaborative environment which promotes personal and professional development. The clients we serve are UK and Ireland domiciled insurance companies as well as Lloyd's syndicates writing International Property business.


To distinguish ourselves from the competition, we provide services to our clients and we share our knowledge with them. We seek to help our clients to grow and to flourish with them, by closing the protection gap, co-creating new products as well as helping them with capital and earnings volatility management.


Deals we write in our desk range from country-specific treaties focusing on UK and Ireland to worldwide solutions with a wide coverage. As a result, you will collaborate with other lines of business, facultative underwriting, offices abroad and structured reinsurance within Swiss Re.


About you:  

  • Degree educated or equivalent, preferably with a quantitative, scientific or economic focus.
  • You have a deep understanding of treaty reinsurance, most importantly in the areas of structuring, pricing, and evaluating terms and conditions.
  • You understand the value chain of insurance, as well as consumer needs and buying behaviors, to identify and articulate the value of our solutions offering.
  • You understand modern technology and have prior experience in navigating the digital space.
  • You believe in continuous learning and appreciate development and change as meaningful ingredients to your work.
  • You have demonstrated analytical and quantitative skills and are a pragmatic problem solver. You are able to work under tight time constraints and constant changing boundary conditions.
  • It is vital that you have an intrinsic motivation and like to take ownership. As an empowered individual, you are dedicated and always use your initiative.
  • You are creative, able to adapt your communication to the required level, and you thrive in collaborations with colleagues and clients.
  • Partner management both internally and externally is fundamental to making this role a success
  • Your English is fluent, additional languages like German, French or Spanish are a plus. You have a real passion for interacting with colleagues from many different nationalities.


Also advantageous

  • Work experience in a quantitative field and/or consulting background.
  • Experience in project or deal team management.
