Claims Specialist, Construction Defect/General Liability

This Claims Specialist will be responsible for handling Construction Defect and General Liability claims arising from policies issued under various Swiss Re Group-based programs. The successful candidate will have significant claims handling experience and possess solid coverage, liability, damage investigation, evaluation, negotiation, claims resolution and customer service skills. We are looking for a proactive claims professional who is organized and can work well, both independently and as part of a team and is keen on career development.
Preferred location is CA, NY, TX or FL. Teleworking is a possible option for this position for candidates who are not located near a Swiss Re office.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Direct handling of Construction Defect and General Liability claims of varying severity from receipt to final resolution.
- Perform coverage analyses and draft coverage position letters consistent with those analyses.
- Investigate, evaluate and settle claims, applying technical knowledge and people skills to effect fair and prompt claim resolution.
- Complete detailed reviews of claims related issues, including coverage, liability and damages and, document the claim files appropriately.
- Set and maintain appropriate and timely indemnity and expense reserves.
- Formulate and execute negotiation and resolution strategies. Must be comfortable negotiating directly with Insured's, other claims professionals, mediators, and/or attorneys.
- Direct and manage defense counsel, independent adjusters and experts/consultants with adherence to company guidelines and budgets.
- Responsibility for making claims-handling decisions within a financial authority level
- Comply with all legal and regulatory requirements, including licensing requirements
About the Team
As part of this claims team, you will interact with regional insurance markets, customers and service providers. Ideally, this claims specialist will also collaborate with various teams in the acquisition of new business opportunities.
We support underwriting teams with policy and portfolio reviews and drafting initiatives, share lessons learned and observed claims/coverage trends to improve risk assessment and the underwriting process. We also proudly promote the company's technical claims expertise and profile in the marketplace.
About You:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent industry experience
- 8-10 years insurance claims handling experience
- Excellent writing and customer service skills
- Good organizational skills and a disciplined, self-motivated personality
- Proficient in interpersonal, negotiation, presentation and professional oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team
- Solid computer skills including proficiency in the use of Word, Excel and Outlook
- Ability and willingness to learn new claims handling systems
- Proven presentation skills
- Travel may be required but would likely be minimal
- Active Adjuster Licenses in CA, TX, NY and FL are desirable, as is the willingness to procure any other state licensing that may be required.
For New York City, NY, Westchester County, NY and California the estimated base salary range for this position is $75,000 to $138,000. The specific salary offered for this or any given role will take into account a number of factors including but not limited to job location, scope of role, qualifications, complexity/specialization/scarcity of talent, experience, education, and employer budget.
